A market survey revealed that in Romania there are between 100,000 and 300,000 models offering their services via webcam chat.
The quarantine to combat the pandemic has swept through many economic sectors, but there are some, such as webcam sex services, which have multiplied. This sector has seen its demand double in just a few weeks.
A market study, an online platform that connects webcam studios with clients, revealed that in Romania there are between 100,000 and 300,000 models offering their services via webcams.
This estimate makes the Balkan country one of the three world powers in the sector along with the United States and Colombia, it adds in a recent report.
Record high number of users
“I think we are witnessing an all-time high in both subscribers signing up and models. This is thanks to people being at home and spending more time on the Internet,” says Ionut Militaru, head of videochat agency Unique Studio in Bucharest.
“User traffic has grown 100%, although revenues don’t necessarily reflect this increase,” says Militaru, who started as an adult videochat model when he was 18. At 32, he is a veteran in the sector.
Sex and relationships in quarantine: times of adaptation and reinvention.
“Many subscribers are cooped up at home with their families and can’t log on as many hours as when they were logging on to webcams from work. Or in a hotel room during their business trips,” he explains.
His wife, Cristina, describes an explosion in consumption among users who do not have these kinds of obstacles. He puts the increase in revenue at 50%, an upward trend confirmed to Efe by two other videochat studios and other digital platforms. These offer the opportunity to advertise to adult webcam sex agencies and models.
“A subscriber who normally spent three or four hours is now connected for up to 10 hours, even 14 hours,” says Cristina Militaru, 33. The expert continues to model in her studio. “Our subscribers are more eager for conversation and are more active on the web,” says the owner of camchief.com.
Actresses, lovers and psychologists
The “webcammers” contacted by Efe reject that it is only a kind of “personalized porn” and emphasize the importance of conversation in this work.
“Here money is not made with your legs open,” says Ava Goddess in a graphic way. “A man coming in to satisfy his natural needs may last five, ten minutes. In that time we don’t make more than about ten dollars. It’s thought that a high-cache model can take several thousand dollars a day,” she explains.
The money, she continues, is made “in the hours” of conversation that come after the show. Depending on seniority and cache, a minute of adult webcam sex is paid at between $2 and $10.
“A model with a high level of general culture with good English and no inhibitions can reach 5,000 or even 10,000 euros a month,” assures Cristina Militaru.
“A videochat model has a role of psychologist, confidant, counselor and of course lover,” relates Ava in one of the rooms from which she talks to her clients. “There are subscribers who fall in love; there have been some who have even introduced me to their children,” adds model Renesmezanith, 21.
This young Romanian woman, with her exotic stage name, was on the verge of leaving the profession because of a scar left from an operation. However, the mark on her body has led her to deepen her relationship with a client who underwent the same surgery and with whom she talks for hours about this experience.
More aspiring models
Containment orders and business closures in the fight against the pandemic have put millions of people out of work. In Romania, thousands of women have sought a job in adult webcams.
This is the case of Mirabella, the stage name of a 22-year-old woman, who lost her job when the establishment had to close. The casino had no choice in the face of the state of emergency that has been in force in Romania since mid-March.
“When I became unemployed I asked friends for jobs; one of them works as a videochat model and brought me here,” she tells Efe. “It’s more mental than physical work, and harder than people think,” she adds from her room at Unique Studio.
The hospitality and tourism sector has been one of the hardest hit by the coronavirus crisis, and that’s where many of the new models come from. Others, on the other hand, have come to webcamming directly from the sex industry, impossible to perform these days without violating the rules of social distancing.
part of the girls who have come are dancers who worked abroad,” Cristian Neagu, manager of Privat Studio in Bucharest, tells Efe. “They have come to this sector because they know how to exploit their sexuality and can make money with it,” he assures.
However, he recalls the “psychological” side of working in front of webcams. She warns that “having been a good striptease dancer doesn’t mean you’ll be raining money” in this online service.
