Piano Teacher and Blogger Melody Tan

I’m Melody from Singapore, I’m actually a full time Financial Planner and working part time as a Piano Teacher! Blogging has been a hobby that I started 4 years back and along the way I picked up certain sponsorships. Fashion was something I started having interest in over the past 3 years. Food has been my lifelong love.

How did you get started into blogging?

I have always liked the thought of sharing experiences to people who can relate to them.

For example, travel posts are my extreme favs, and I take really long to craft out my DIY itineraries when I go abroad so I could find the less typical tourist spots and guide readers on getting around there so they don’t have to keep googling for directions before the trip!

It’s very competitive being a blogger, so what do you do to stand out from the rest?

I am not aiming to “stand out from the rest” but rather just having a voice amongst those who can relate to my thoughts!

Where do you usually shop?

Over the past 2 to 3 years I’ve been pretty much getting 95% of my clothes online, be it through the Carousell app, or shipping it from China, US, etc.
I don’t buy really expensive items cause I have too many clothes to wear them more than once usually!

What’s the most expensive item you have splurged on?

That has got to be on my camera cause I really love photography.

Do you have the urge to critic someone’s dress style if you see that it is a fashion catastrophe?

I believe people dress up for various reasons, be it for comfort on that day, or they are trying to stand out from the crowd, or they are trying out a new style.

I don’t think I have any rights to tell someone what they should be wearing. Not saying that I don’t judge but there isn’t a need to make someone feel insecure!

What guilty indulgences do you have for food?

I used to eat ice cream like thrice a day?! Sometimes when I’m really stressed out at work I could eat 2 lunches, 2 dinners and all kinds of snacks. Not a good habit I know~

Where are some recommended food spots our readers can go when visiting Singapore?

I find it really had to think of authentic and really good food places in Singapore these days cause it’s all being taken over by food chains mostly, but if it’s your first time here I think Punggol Nasi Lemak (238 Tanjong Katong Rd, Singapore 437026), Katong Laksa (53 E Coast Rd, Singapore 428771) could be put to consideration.

For convenience sake you could just go to Newton Circus Food Centre to comb all the hawker food stalls! Apparently they are open till 2am so it could make a night supper spot for tourists.

Are you a morning person or night owl?

Night owl for sure, I think everyone around me already knows that! I get really grumpy in the morning and I work so much better at night.

Funniest thing you’ve done or experienced?

Eating a spider in Cambodia. Or the Balut (developing duck embryo) in Philippines. Or fried worms in China when I was too young to remember thankfully.

What’s sexy to you?

Confidence + the drive in a guy to strive for what they want + intelligence.

I’ll be doing a few shoots that I’ve yet to update on my blog and several collaborations.

How does blogger Nicole Cheah stay unique from the rest?

Who is this pretty Blogger?

I’m Nicole from Penang, Malaysia – more commonly known as ncavien on my social media sites. Currently doing my final semester in my degree course.

When did you start blogging and how did it begin?

I started about 6 years back when I was in secondary school because everyone was creating one but I did not actually produce good content (it was actually really bad haha). I settled down on a proper blog with more creative and personal content about 3 years ago, which is my current one – ncavien.

It is very competitive being a blogger these days. How do you stand out from the rest and stay unique to your readers?

Personally I think I have a different approach to my blog and style in terms of fashion and writing. I believe my fashion style is more of a mix of grunge and minimalism (especially my love for dark coloured lipsticks), being true to myself and having my own personal style helps me stand out.

What are some misconceptions people have about bloggers?

That it is easy. To be frank, I’m far from being as successful as half the bloggers I know but blogging is something that comes from passion and sharing creative juices with others. It is definitely not easy to maintain a blog with good content.

How is a typical day like for you?

Doing assignments, dressing up, sleeping – things like that. My days are pretty boring honestly.

Where do you usually shop for clothes?

Topshop! Bits and pieces everywhere else but mainly Topshop.

What’s one overrated fashion accessory?

Can’t think of one. If you can carry the accessory well, by all means go ahead and do you. Just make sure you’re not just following the trend… if that’s the case it’s probably overrated.

Which holiday destination do you absolutely want to go?

Rome.

If you had the chance to learn anything in this world, what will it be?

Gymnastics.

What music best describes you?

Probably rock with a mix of pop and a dash of RnB.

What’s sexy to you?

Confidence and character. If you believe in yourself, feel comfortable with your body, carry yourself well and love yourself, for who you are and for all the right reasons, it’ll show. Sexy doesn’t have to be related to sexual desires but how you carry yourself for people to perceive you and respect you… in a sexy way.

What do you find most challenging being a blogger?

The most challenging is the writing skills and number of followers as this will affect the number of readers who will appreciate your stories.

Which are some common misconceptions you hear about bloggers?

Bloggers get free stuff all the time

Typically it seems to be free but to clear things up, when we receive products for review, this should not be considered free. We have a moral and legal obligation when it comes to sponsored gifts, so receiving gifts is actually a hassle. We work hard because we are morally obligated to our readers and we have to make sure we don’t offend anyone.

Bloggers make a lot of easy money.

We don’t make money easy, it’s just similar as being a sales or insurance person. With only hard work you will earn more, otherwise you earn less.

As soon as you start blogging, readers will come out of nowhere

Readers don’t come easy for us. As a reader, what do you usually look for? That will be the answer.

What made you decide to join the Miss Singapore Beauty Pageant?

Pageants have their age limit. Somehow it hit me to join the pageant since I am 23 already. Apart from that, to gain experience and network with new people.

How was the experience like for you at MSBP?

Both good and bad. I shall not share the bad experiences. What I have gained is that being in a pageant is not easy. However I get to learn many things such as how to present yourself while meeting clients. I get to meet real friends in the pageant. Time management is also a component. It is definitely a good one, you will only get to experience that here and not elsewhere.

Do you have a travel bucket list?

Yes I do.

If you had the choice for any superpower, what will it be and why?

Time Manipulation – with the power of time manipulation, good times would last longer with this convenient superpower. Time will be more than enough.

Are you more of a party girl or stay home girl.

Back then in my 18 to 21 years, I was a party girl. It’s never a business where I get to enjoy every day without troubling. After turning 21, I am a stay home girl where I spend more time resting at home and spending time with my family.

What guilty indulgences do you have for food?

Fast food.

Funniest thing you’ve done or experienced?

Making a joke out of myself in front of my parents, to make them smile.

What’s sexy to you?

Sexy is self-confident. Being real, to have a real heart. Love others wholeheartedly. Enjoy the things you do.

I have a desire to form a group for gig. If you can sing and play any instrumental, you are the one. I also need videography and photography parts as well.

Beauty baker Erika shares her wonderful desserts

SimplySxy catches up with Erika as we ask this lovely baker on her favourite creations, dessert inspirations and how her love for baking began.

Hi Erika, thank you for taking the time to answer our questions on SimplySxy. Please share with us a little about yourself and where you’re from?

Hi! I’m a baking blogger from Singapore who creates unique desserts. I share the recipes on www.sumopocky.com. Baking is my therapy and I find peace one recipe at a time. Was it tough at the beginning when you started baking for the first time or did it come naturally to you?

I embarked on this baking journey by learning how to make macarons. It was an ambitious choice of dessert for a beginner with close to zero experience. While I had to go through multiple batches of failed macarons, my first successful batch marked the launch of my baking endeavours.

In retrospect, the failures were beneficial in setting my foundations of basic baking techniques. From then on, it was much easier to approach other recipes. Over time, I’ve become more adventurous in trying out or creating new recipes. Now and then, I still experience failures in the kitchen. But that is fine! It is part and parcel and helps me to grow as a baker.

Who gets to try and critique your desserts when you first make them?

My friends and family are often the first to get a taste of my desserts. Based on their highly valued feedback, improvements are made to each recipe before it is published on Sumopocky. P.S. They are also kind enough to devour my less than pretty failed desserts, because ugly desserts need loving too!

Where do you get your inspiration behind all those beautiful desserts?

Inspiration comes from a non-exhaustive list of sources – from fellow bakers online, to gourmet magazines, to trips to bakeries and patisseries. Sometimes, inspiration strikes from the most unexpected places such as nature, the city skyline, a piece of art, a beautiful film, or even a well-written novel.

Which are 3 of your all time proudest creations?

The top 3 of my all time favourite original creations have to be my Totoro Black Sesame Chiffon Cake, Alpaca Macarons and Tsum Tsum Mooncakes. I love how unique and adorable they are, and most importantly, their tastes leave me craving for more!

Do you have any other hobbies?

When I’m not in the kitchen, I’m knee deep in thought-provoking novels and films. I spend hours wandering in the fictional universes created by my favourite author, Haruki Murakami. Films by brilliant directors from the likes of Michel Gondry and Wes Anderson also keep me hooked to the screen. And whenever a book or film impacts me deeply, I have the natural compulsion to share my book and movie reviews on Sumopocky.

What guilty pleasures do you have for food?

I cannot resist desserts with dark chocolate, cheese, matcha green tea and berries. My guilty pleasures include macarons, lava cakes, cheesecakes, tiramisu, and probably any Japanese dessert.

If you had the chance to meet anyone past or present, who will it be?

I will like to meet Haruki Murakami. From his books, he appears to be such a chill yet knowledgeable and opinionated guy. Thus, it’d be nice to spend a day chilling with him and having conversations about anything under the umbrella of life.

Hi Cassandra, thank you very much for your time taken to answer our questions on SimplySxy. Can you share with our readers a little about yourself and where you’re from?

I’m a Student Care Teacher by day, a fashion blogger by night. I’ve always have big affection for fashion especially the styling part from mix and matching to putting together different looks with the same piece of clothing. I don’t believe in just wearing it once. I do beauty post as well and so I review with honesty because that’s what I would want to know when looking for reviews myself.

Where did your interest to start blogging come from?

It was actually through the encouragement of a blogger friend Ena and as I’ve continue my blogger journey, I’m thankful to meet many genuine blogger such as June who have help me along the way.

What are the challenges you face to maintaining your blog?

I was hoping for more fashion content but I’ve much more beauty opportunity hence I’m still working hard to increase my fashion content.

Keeping it short and sweet is not easy as well especially comes to beauty products, you want to be as informative as possible but at the same time without looking like you’re typing an essay.

In terms of technical wise, I’ve also been thinking of upping my game for my blog as I am still looking for a good investment that I can trust to help with changing up the look/setup of my blog.

Which are your favourite fashion brands?

H&M, Charles & Keith, New Look, Zalora and so many more!!!

If you had the chance to time travel, where will you choose to go?

Maybe to see how current big brand started such as Chanel, Prada or even LV. We all know that success does not happen instantly so I figure it may be fun to be able to hop back in time and get firsthand view of how it all started.

Do you have any phobias?

No I guess, not that I can think of.

Are you more of a night owl or morning person?

Night owl hands down! I sleep at 2am everyday! Hahaha *waving goodbye to beauty sleep*

What was the funniest or most embarrassing thing that has happened to you?

I once spat water right at a classmate after sipping because he was pronouncing a name wrongly on a book. Felt embarrassed but everyone around him laugh it off.

Who is Ollyvia Laura?

Hello SimplySxy, it’s really an honour to be interviewed by you. I am Ollyvia Laura, a lifestyle blogger behind www.somethingrealserious.com. An Asian girl from a tropical city, Balikpapan in Indonesiaa who has officially graduated from Public Health with my bachelors. Because I am a fresh graduate, I still have no specific/permanent work so I’m a full-time blogger and also a digital influencer as Clozette Indonesia ambassador. Sometimes I am a pianist and freelance photographer too away from social media life.

My blog (known as SRS Blog) is a personal styled blog but I also blog about travelling, life lessons, beauty, daily inspirations and events/projects. SRS blog’s content is mostly the truth about my life, all the experiences, all the stories, all the opportunities I’ve been through in my life. By blogging, I can express and share what I think, what I want, and of course what I wear (most of posts on SRS Blog about my look/outfit).

How will you describe your fashion style?

Ever changing style? Actually I am not quite sure about my fashion style, I have always loved fashion so I always go with my feelings/moods. Dressing for me is an instinct that I can’t analyze, sometimes I could dress up in feminine way wearing pastel dress but the other day I’d dress up in edgy style wearing vintage blouse + skirt pairing with sneaker wedges.

What’s the sexiest thing in your wardrobe?

Lace dress from H&M bought at H&M store in Harajuku, Japan for only $5.

A must have in your life is?

New shoes every week (I wish). I am a shoe lover.

What’s one overrated fashion accessory?

Choker? I don’t know why but I dislike seeing people wearing chokers around their necks, it disturbs the style in my humble opinion.

Give one example of a fashion disaster you have laid your eyes on?

Wearing leopard prints from head to toe, just why? It’s not fashion, it looks like wearing an animal costume, totally not a fashion.

If you had the chance to learn anything in this world, what will it be?

I wish I had a chance to learn how to design shoes, so that I can create and produce my own shoes; the comfiest, stylish yet trendy ones in this world.

Which movie character best represents you?

Mary Margaret “Meg” Kelly in Monte Carlo.

One fun fact about yourself not usually known?

I know how to fight, and pretty much a good fighter. I’ve registered myself in Muay Thai class.

Craziest thing you’ve done?

Craziest thing I have ever done is asking a shopkeeper, literally a stranger to take my OOTD shoots inside the mall for the sake of my blog’s life LOL. Luckily he said yes and decided to leave the store for 5 minutes to take my outfit photos and the results were great.

What’s sexy to you?

Sexy is not only knowing yourself and your body shape and embracing it, but also having a self-confidence, a warm heart, well educated and staying true to yourself.

Fashion blogger GG names the one fashion catastrophe everyone must avoid

Who is GG?

My name is GG, I am usually known at @plaaastic. I am also usually known for being a fashion blogger, but I do everything honestly. Just art in general I guess.

How will you describe your fashion style?

My fashion style is just me. I don’t have a name for it, because I dress different all the time. Can’t stick to one thing, I have to keep evolving.

What’s the sexiest thing in your wardrobe?

The nonexistent bra.

Where do you usually shop?

I don’t have an usual place, bits and pieces from everywhere. Independent brands, diy, vintage…

What’s the most expensive item you have splurged on?

Probably my platforms. I don’t spend much on clothes honestly, like not one big thing at a time, always small stuffs all year round. Never have enough money to splurged actually lol.

Do you have the urge to critic someone’s dress style if you see that it is a fashion catastrophe?

I don’t critique people who have their own style, I critique people who have absolutely no personal style. I mean how can you dress up and go out with something that does not represent you in anyway and feel comfortable with that? Especially those people who copy others. Your body is your canvas that you can draw on whatever the fuck you want but you use it to copy a famous painting instead and that’s just sad.

If you had the choice of any superpower, what will it be and why?

To turn into any animals, objects, and being I want. I want to have any other body but my own, so if I have a super power I want to have them all.

Which cartoon character best represents you?

Mojojojo from Powerpuff girls.

What guilty indulgences do you have for food?

Gosh this is an awkward question. Food equal guilt for me so I don’t know.

Funniest thing you’ve done or experienced?

I did a stand up comedy a few nights ago and I got kicked off the stage because I was bumping everybody out.

What’s sexy to you?

Someone who is having absolute power over their body. Examples: woman who are comfortable naked, dancers who make their body moves exactly like how they imagine it, anyone who says “fuck it I am getting a new face” and get plastic surgery. Sexy for me is not about sex, it’s more of a fascination of someone’s view of their own sexuality (if that even make any sense).

Hi Joanne, thanks for taking the time to answer our questions on SimplySxy. Can you share a little about yourself and where you’re from?

Hey!! thanks for having me. I’m Joanne, often referred as Juuannie. I am a style blogger based in Hong Kong. I focus on Instagram and recently also started a YouTube channel.

How will you describe your personal fashion style?

My style is actually a mixture of goth, punk and street style. I’d like to convey a “Vampire + Doll” kind of sense through my style.

Who, if any, are your fashion influences?

I don’t think I am influenced by anyone, but my own experience and personality.

Are most of your clothes and fashion accessories black in colour?

YES!! Almost all my clothes are black, except a few are white. Yet for accessories, I have tones of silver, some brown, some blue, some pink, some purple…usually earrings.

Where do you usually shop from?

I actually shop everywhere, online or in real stores. I can always find a way to put black things in different style my way 😀 and that’s why its so fun !!

Do you have any hobbies?

I love playing computer games and Wii with my boyfriend and my family so much!! Its pretty much how I spend most of my weekends hehe. I also like doing shootings with friends and watching Japanese movies with my boyfriend.

How will you describe a typical day like?

When I have Uni, my daily routine is very boring. I wake up late and go to Uni late, finish class, go home to do work, cook, Skype with my boyfriend and then watch a movie together online then sleep.

When I don’t have Uni, I wake up, play with my dogs, do my make up, go out, do shootings, meet friends / family / my boyfriend, go home and have family dinner, play with my dogs and sleep.

Hi, I am Yanna from Hong Kong. I am a food blogger and I have been a freelance model since 2011. I like eating and photo taking. Sometimes I would share my travel videos on Youtube. You are probably the biggest foodie we have interviewed so far on SimplySxy. Where did the inspiration to post about food come from?

I like sharing delicious and attractively presented food to everyone. When my photos receive active responses, it motivates me to keep uploading photos every day.

It is amazing, the variety and colours of all the different food posts on your Instagram. Is there anything you don’t eat?

Yes, I don’t like beef and lamb!

Do you follow a strict diet?

No. If I follow a strict diet, I would definitely miss lots of yummy food.

What is your beauty regime like to looking so fabulous?

Playing sports is important to me mainly because I eat a lot every day. Exercise can burn calories as well as improve body shape, strength and health.

How will you describe your fashion style?

Warm and comfortable.

Is there a particular type of food or foods which you want to try but have yet to do so?

Yes of course. I have never tried some types of food, such as Spanish, Turkish and French cuisines.

If you had the opportunity to time travel, where will you go to?

I would like to visit Japan again. Last time I went to Tokyo, and I plan to visit Osaka next time.

Hello! It is my utmost pleasure to meet you too! (: I am Agnes and I am from Singapore. I am known to many more commonly as Aggylow and I am a fashion/beauty and lifestyle blogger. I am also a piano teacher when I’m off social media.

How long have you been blogging and what inspired you to do so?

I have been blogging since I was in Secondary 1, about 11 years ago. It all started out just blogging about my usual boring secondary school life, and I remember at that time I was typing like this (e.g. eeux, lubzxz, foreverzxzx) HAHAHA… but yes it all started out just like that! What kept me going is the satisfaction I get when people actually do take time to read my blog and find out more about things going on in my life, I really really appreciate that! (:

You have a love of music and run a music school, Piannisimato, teaching piano to students. Where did your passion for music come from?

That is not my music school, just my little humble piano teaching business where I teach from home or head to my students’ places to teach. I started playing the piano and singing since I was 4 years old, all thanks to my Mum! Her guidance pushed my determination and helped me to get this far.

Which period of music do you enjoy playing most and do you have a favorite composer?

My favourites would be Classical, Romantic and Modern Century music as they are so different in all aspects. Classical music is mostly simple and repetitive, but good and strong playing technique is needed in order to play pieces from this period. I enjoy pieces, from Mozart, Schubert and Beethoven.

Romantic period songs requires proper mood to play each piece, mostly really dramatic changes involved. I started to appreciate this period of music as I was much older as I was more mature and able to portray the right expressions to successfully play each Romantic piece. My favourite composers are Chopin (especially!) and Tchaikovsky.

Modern Century music are my least favourite out of this three, but I really enjoy playing Jazz and Blues from this era. It makes you think more (due to rhythmic difference and style of playing) and tunes are mostly pretty light-hearted and a little quirky/wacky… like me sometimes 😛 Favourite composer of this era… none yet, I’m still finding a favourite (:

Where do you usually do your shopping?

Online, or stores like H&M, Zara, sometimes River Island. But my favourite buys are usually from overseas 😀

How will you describe your fashion style?

I’m pretty flexible, and I like a mix of everything. I can go girly, rock, chic, minimal, casual… Rojak style!

On a scale of 1-10, how much of a foodie are you?

Eh………I guess 2? :X Oh no.. I’m not a good person to ask when it comes to food because I basically think everything is nice… because I’m not choosy or picky when it comes to food… As in I do enjoy eating but there is just other things in life I enjoy more than food…..like fashion and travelling!! hahaha!

If you had the opportunity to time travel, where will you go to?

Wow… this is a tough one.. I would like to be able to go back in time to prevent major disasters/deaths from happening, or going back to undo certain things that I have done causing hurt to people I love or going back in time where I can make choices all over again to prevent certain unhappiness and sadness from happening…

I feel that sexiness is when you are confident yet humble, love yourself, be determined about what you enjoy doing and most importantly cherish and love the people around you! Because when you do all of that, you will feel happiness from the bottom of your heart and being happy, enjoying the company of your loved ones and doing the things you enjoy makes you really sexy! 😉
