The Stigma Of Sex Work Part I

I am an Escort, a Webcam model and a Content Creator and I love my job. I’ve been escorting for nine years now (on and off) and web-camming for almost two years but it’s the last year that I have really been expanding my business and my ‘brand’.

I love meeting new people, whether that is in person or via webcam and helping them explore their fantasies. I love interacting with people on webcam and the phone. But more than anything, I love helping those people that need the special interaction that only sex and a sex worker can give them. For those people, it isn’t just about sex; it’s about being intimate and close to someone, which is something they don’t get in their personal lives.

During the COVID pandemic and lockdown, I have not been able to meet clients, so I have turned my focus to online services; webcam sites and uploading videos and pictures onto selling and subscription sites. I have been very aware that so many people need someone to talk to, especially if they are isolating at home alone and I always greet people who come into my chatrooms on the webcam sites as I want everyone to feel welcome, whether they have money to spend or not; it’s a difficult time for everyone at the moment. So many people have thanked me for talking to them. Those who cannot afford to pay for private shows today, might be able to another day.

With any job, there are parts of it you don’t enjoy; time wasters are a nuisance and some people feel you are there just to talk to them any time of the day or night without any mention of paying for services. I get phone calls from private numbers a lot which can get very annoying; it’s very disrespectful but over time, you develop ways to handle them.

There’s more admin than most people realise. We don’t have a team of administrators (I wish I did) so every phone call, text message and email can only be replied to by me, and every promotional poster and social media post is created and uploaded by me. I also have my accounts to produce for my tax returns. I wouldn’t want to do any other job though.

Stigma That Surrounds Sex Work Today

There are many people that are completely fine with sex work and find it all really interesting. There are other people that are fine with the online work but isn’t comfortable about the escorting. Unfortunately, the vast majority of people see it as a negative. They think it’s dirty and seedy and can’t understand why someone would sell themselves. They also believe, all people that seek services from sex workers are grubby, middle-aged men that have no regard for you as a person. In my experience, this has not been the case and these assumptions and stereotypes are incorrect.

Dehumanising sex workers happens too often. Sex workers are made to feel like they don’t matter or that their lives aren’t important due to narrow-mindedness and people’s morals. The media doesn’t help this by only reporting on the very tragic or the very glamourous sex workers. It feels very apparent that the media doesn’t want to normalise the sex industry.

Simple things, like opening a business bank account has been very difficult for me. I am registered as self employed with HMRC (Her Majesty’s Revenue and Customs) as an Escort. Escorting in the UK is legal. I had four bank account applications turned down. My credit history is very good. I was not asking for an overdraft or a bank loan; just a bank account in my business name so my clients did not know my real name and keeps me and my family safe. Three bank accounts would not explain why my application was declined. The fourth one was honest enough to tell me that “we cannot support someone in your line of work”. In the end, I seeked advice to ensure I couldn’t get in trouble and applied for a bank account as a beautician. My application was accepted within a few days. Since then, I have moved bank accounts and it is stated on their terms and conditions that you cannot receive any money for sex related work. It is a worry but I need a business account.

Adult content and web-camming sites have shocked me, as the vast majority of them are very anti-escorting. It is fine for you to sell pornographic material or sell private webcam shows but if they find out you are an escort they can delete your page without warning and in most cases, keep the money you have earned. I didn’t realise how split the adult industry was; some aspects of it is okay yet other aspects aren’t.

Even in my personal life, stigma is everywhere. My parents don’t want anyone to know what I do because they are embarrassed. They support me the best they can but they would rather I had a “normal” job. My family lie to my grandparents, uncle’s and auntie’s, and in turn, so do I.

It is the negative connotations and stigma surrounding the job I love, that stops me from shouting from the rooftops that “I’m a sex worker and proud of it”!! This is a career I have chosen but I know my children would have a difficult time through bullying or name calling if locals knew and I don’t want that for them.

The media love to portray the extreme cases, either the tragedy or the glamorous but there are people like me that sit nicely in the middle that are just as important in this industry. It is only by showing the full spectrum, can people start to understand what our work is like, and hopefully walls can start to be broken down. I can’t help but feel like the media doesn’t want to ‘normalise’ sex work.

With COVID, all escorting is on hold but I am working very hard to create more content for online and give my subscribers and buyers what they want. I’m looking into setting up my own website although that will take a while. I am also making contact with other sex workers so that we can collaborate on some work once it is safe to meet up after COVID. So watch this space!!
