Singapore Entrepreneur & Model Rathi Menon

Hi SimplySxy! First of all, thanks for the feature! Absolute pleasure for me too! Hi Everyone! My name is Rathi, I am born and bred in Singapore. I am currently a manager at F45 gym. I started off modelling few years back when I won the Miss Universe Singapore (2014) and somehow my interest transitioned into the fitness industry.

Do you have any hobbies or interests?

Hobbies include riding my bike. I own a super 4 and its been 10 years of riding now. My bike is obviously my mode of transportation but it’s also my hobby to ride to nowhere. Long rides at night is the best I can get out of the roads here in Singapore. Interests to travel to destinations that bring me close to nature.

What is your proudest achievement so far?

My recent trip to South America. It was a solo trip and, while in Peru I hiked up a few mountains, unprepared. It was one of the toughest things I have done, at an altitude of 5200 meters, the thin oxygen showed my lungs no mercy and the journey felt like I would never make it to the end. But I did and survived. Not only were the views beyond magnificent but I felt extremely proud of myself for this achievement, an unforgettable experience for me.

Which food or drink can you not live without?

Just water is fine, and I can’t live without carbs, I really can’t.

Where do you love to shop from?

I’m super random when it comes to shopping. Fashion is so versatile. I am not brand conscious. I believe if you have a sense of style and you know your own taste and what works best for you, you can pick the right garments and accessories and be dressed to kill.

    Which flavor best describes you?

    Rocky Road.

If you could have a super power, what will it be?

    Energy projection.

What turns you off on a date?

Disrespect in any way, shape, or form.

Thank you for taking the time to answer our questions Rathi. One question before we end, how do you define “sexy”?

Someone who is control of their life, a positive ambitious person who practices self-love and values personal growth.

Do you have any hobbies or interests?

I like taking pictures and cooking.

Which kind of food are your favorites?

Seafood, especially shrimp, crab, and lobsters.

Where do you love to shop from?

I usually buy things from physical stores, so I don’t spend much time shopping.

Is there any superstition you believe in?

I believe in the Tarot card. I once calculated a very accurate prediction, but then I couldn’t find the shop anymore.

If you can learn anything in this world, what will it be?

Learning magic, I really hope that I can be a person with magic, and can make the whole world happy and beautiful

  • Common Misconceptions About Models

    Common Misconceptions About Models

Like everything in life, modelling also has its pros and cons but for myself, it’s had an extremely positive impact on my life, helping me with self-confidence, self-love and the ability to show people who I really am online. But, I also feel like I have to be more conscious of the information that I share with people, and be mindful of the people who don’t have my best interests at heart. Despite all of that, I wouldn’t change this life for any other.

I honestly never wanted to model, but here I am! When I was sixteen, I started getting really active in the gym and I wanted to share my progress with others so I started posting photos of myself on Instagram in hopes to inspire others. When I was eighteen, I moved to Vancouver, Canada to pursue a degree in Communications. I was completely swept off my feet with the new lifestyle that I stopped going to the gym completely, but I knew I still wanted to inspire others.

Initially, I wanted to be a social media influencer primarily through YouTube but I found that after I bought my first camera that I lacked the self-confidence to actually post what I had to share with others online. By fluke, a friend from high school contacted me and asked if I wanted to do a photoshoot with her boyfriend and on a whim, I gave it a shot and the rest is basically history!

I’ve been modelling non-stop since then, having been featured in several publications, the VOGUE Italia website, and the Vancouver International Fashion Gala.

    Favorite Modelling Genres

Every time I shoot a new genre I find myself learning too much about the industry and about my own style but I think modelling in front of urban landscapes with alternative clothes and makeup is the most exciting to me, since I grew up in a small town and the vibe is completely different.

I also love shooting swimwear, as I find it extremely empowering and I think that it inspires other women to feel confident in their own bodies at the beach.

    Photographer: https://www.instagram.com/yaboystephan/

Is Posing In Front Of The Camera Difficult?

Posing in front of a camera takes a lot of practice, but I think that the most important skill to have in front of a camera and in life is self-confidence. When I first started modelling, I had other models and photographers directing me around because I didn’t really know who I was behind the lens, I didn’t have a specific style or image I wanted to portray and I also cared about what others thought of me.

It was until I was working in the industry for 6-8 months that I started growing into my own style and stopped caring about what others thought of me. With a lot of practice and self-confidence, posing in front of the camera will come naturally. It’s your show, so steal it!

    Common Misconceptions About Models

I often hear that models are stuck up and rude within the industry, but from my own personal experience, not all of us are like that. I find that a lot of my followers on Instagram are surprised that I answer their DMs which shocks me. I make sure to reply to every single one of my followers, it might not be a quick reply but I always reply!

The other misconception about models I often hear is that we’re always late, which definitely varies depending on the model. I find that those who are late don’t take their job very seriously, and expect others to wait on them which isn’t fair to the entire team.

    Photographer: https://www.instagram.com/izakarts

How The Modelling Industry Can Improve

Overall, I think the modelling industry as a whole needs to be more accepting of race, size, shapes and flaws! It’s really sad when I hear from people that they don’t feel fully represented in the industry or just in general. Although there has been a lot of positive changes in the last few years, I still think the industry has a long way to go.

Tyler Krueger – I’m a 20 year-old Canadian model born and raised in Tofino, BC. I’m half Chinese and half German, currently living in Vancouver, BC. I’m a third year Communications student, hoping to pursue a job in advertising or post-production in the creative industry!

I started doing small shoots on the local beaches with my friends for my fitness Instagram, but I realized I really enjoyed creating content in front of and behind the lens. I had always wanted to pursue a career on YouTube, but I wasn’t confident enough in myself to speak in front of a camera and post it to the internet. After I moved to Vancouver, I started modelling for local swim companies, and I started building up my confidence in front of others and online- and here I am now! I absolutely love that I get to create everyday and work with so many talented people!

  • What Is It Like To Be A Dancer & Model?

What Is It Like To Be A Dancer & Model?

I have loved the arts ever since I was a little girl. I would always have drawing sessions with my older sibling, and sometimes my mom would take us to ceramics studios. In addition to visual art, music has also played a huge part in my life. I’ve been playing piano since the age of seven – I grew up learning to read music like it was my ABC’s. Music has been a constant, unwavering force in my life. Music has always been there as a source of comfort, motivation, encouragement, and of course, enjoyment. Music has never let me down.

Loving music naturally led me to dance at the same time that visual art led me to pursue modeling and graphic design. For this reason, I strongly believe that all the arts are interconnected in some way. Art is about so much more than just capturing the eye; it can tell a story, convey an emotion, raise awareness, and engender change. Art has played such a pivotal role in advancing social movements, as art has the power to educate the masses and galvanize people to rally for a cause. Art is not only enjoyable to make and consume, but plays a huge role in shaping minds, culture, and society.

    Why I Love Dancing

Because I have always loved music, I also loved to watch people dance. When I was young, I would constantly watch music and dance videos in my free time, but I never believed that I was capable of dancing. I would always hold myself back from dancing for fear of being judged, even when my body could barely resist the urge to move. Getting over this fear was a slow, arduous process that took years to move past.

I first started dancing at parties as a way to connect with other people and share energy. Embracing the social aspect of dancing helped me break out of my shell and begin pursuing dance more seriously. I love dance because it helps me feel more connected with others and more confident. Sometimes, if I’m really feeling the music, dancing makes me feel like I’m in my own world, where I’m the one in charge.

    Dance Genres I’m Into

I like to dance jazz funk. I’ve trained through taking classes both at UCLA and at dance studios in LA and joining dance teams. I dance with a UCLA organization called Bruin Burlesque, which specializes in burlesque, a type of sensual, provocative dance that is mainly done in heels. I love to dance jazz funk because it makes me feel powerful and keeps me in touch with my sexuality.

I also dance with Taste the Rainbow, an all LGBTQ+ exhibition dance team. Taste the Rainbow’s pieces cover a variety of styles, including jazz funk, hip hop, vogueing, and waacking. Joining Taste the Rainbow has helped me explore more styles, become even more confident in my sexuality, and grow both as a dancer and as a person.

Dancing Tips For Those Who Are Shy

This was me not too long ago! I truly believe that everyone can be a dancer, just as everyone can be a model. Scientifically, dancing provided an evolutionary advantage, since it allowed humans to bond and communicate. Humans are built to process music and move to the beat. I encourage everyone to jump out of their comfort zone, let loose, and dance.

I get stuck in my own head all the time, worrying about what my dancing looks like and how others are perceiving it. When that happens, I just try to remind myself that it’s not that deep, and that it’s natural to make mistakes. If you’re just starting out, next time you have some alone time, put on a song you love and just groove it out. No mirrors, nothing. Feeling the music flow through your body is possibly one of the most liberating feelings ever.

My Role As A Dancer At Taste the Rainbow

Taste the Rainbow is an all LGBTQ+ dance team that aims to empower queer dancers by providing them with a safe, inclusive, and supportive space. The majority of couples’ pieces in mainstream dance showcases are straight couples. It is something that I have always taken issue with, as it erases the existence of queer couples. It lacks inclusivity, and quite frankly, it’s boring.

Taste the Rainbow subverts that by celebrating the intersection of performance and resistance and carving out space for ourselves in a society that often puts us down. We perform at school events, showcases, and sometimes nightclubs. My favorite performance by far was at Rage, a gay club in West Hollywood. Getting to dance up on stage in front of a huge crowd in a queer space was beyond exhilarating. Joining Taste the Rainbow has definitely been one of the highlights of my college experience; it’s introduced me to such a supportive community and helped me grow so much.

Does Being A Dancer Make Modeling Easier?

Yes, absolutely! I have grown so much through dancing. I have become so much more comfortable and confident taking up space. The camera easily picks up on even the smallest bit of fear or insecurity, which definitely translates into the photos. Dancing has made me more aware of my body, which has definitely helped with my posing. That’s why so many professional dancers eventually become models during their career; they have amazing body control and awareness, plus confidence.

    Advice For Aspiring Dancers

Prepare to make mistakes. Try not to let ego get in the way — your dancing won’t look amazing right off the bat, and that’s just fine. Nobody starts out good (life just doesn’t work like that).

Also, prepare to be pushed to your physical limit. Dancing is an intense workout; it requires both mental and physical fortitude. And try not to take it too seriously — it should always be fun.

  • What I Love About Modeling

    What I Love About Modeling

I love modeling! I’ve always been really comfortable in front of a camera and my mom used to be a model so it’s always been something that’s intrigued me even before I started taking it more serious

    My Favorite Genres To Model

Commercial is my favorite, and I definitely think I’m better suited as a commercial model so it’s perfect! I think my highlights have been any time I’ve done a television shoot, which is always cool!

What Goes On Behind A Photoshoot

A lot of waiting around. It’s a great way to network and meet new people because there’s usually a lot of down time to talk and hang out.

What Lifestyle Is Required Of A Model?

I would say it’s a good rule of thumb to try to stay in shape, be a nice person, and professional. Professionalism is key over anything though.

    Perks Of Being A Model

My favorite perks are all the free items I get from shoots and the different free food I get to try when they cater it to set!

  • Freelance Model Kazuko Otsuka From Japan

Freelance Model Kazuko Otsuka From Japan

Hi! Thank you for having me today. My name is Kazuko Otsuka. I’m a half Japanese and half Filipino born and raised in the Philippines. After I graduated college, I move to Japan. It’s been three years since then.

I’m quite introverted and like to spend my time at home playing video games and watching series.

A year ago, I tried my hand at modeling and came to really enjoy it. It’s not a very “Kazu” thing to do given my personality, but I’m really thankful I tried it out. I’m really challenged doing it and feel like a different person when I see the work created. Now, I mostly do freelance modeling.

    What inspires your fashion style?

To be honest, I know nothing about fashion. Growing up, I was that kid who wore the same shirt and jeans three days in a row. I don’t know anything about coordinating clothes and such. It is my boyfriend who styles me for my shoots. He has more fashion sense than I could even dream of.

How much of a foodie are you and what are your favorites?

I’m not a big foodie. However, being that my father was a sushi chef, I was surrounded by food and know a lot about it. Back in the Philippines, we have a family owned Japanese restaurant called Hanakazu. My favorite Filipino food is Menudo and my favorite Japanese food is Ebi Fry.

    Which flavor best describes you?

I’m definitely not vanilla or strawberry. My personality is not too outgoing for that. If I were to pick a flavor, I’d probably be caramel? I’m not the main attraction but like to complement others. I’ll be the topping on vanilla ice cream.

Do you believe in any superstition?

Growing up in the Philippines, I always heard different superstitions. I never really paid much attention to them.

Have you been in an embarrassing situation that is funny now when looking back?

On the top of my head, the only embarrassing situation I can recall was when I got called out in high school for having a blog. It’s hard to explain everything for it to make sense, but let’s just say I grew up in a very strict environment where our pastors were also our teachers. I made a blog where I uploaded my poems, and I almost got suspended for it. When this happened, I was so embarrassed and felt so bad about it. Now, I realize, there was nothing wrong about it.

If you could learn anything in this world, what will it be?

If I could learn anything in this world and be good at it, I’d want to learn how to code.

What is the funniest or lamest attempt a guy has tried to know you?

The funniest or maybe lamest attempt a guy tried to get to know me must have been when someone took my name down during an exam and searched me on Facebook. Everyone’s names were called out one by one before the exam. The guy must have jotted it down during that time. I found his message a year after in my inbox and it cracked me up. His message went something like, “Your name was so interesting that I had to look it up.”

Thank you for taking the time to answer our questions Kazuko. One question before we end, how do you define “sexy”?

Sexy for me is definitely tied to one’s intelligence. Sexiness lies on the eye’s of the beholder. One person could be considered sexy to another and not sexy to someone else. When it comes down to it, the outward appearance of a person is not enough for that person to be called sexy. A person’s maturity level is sexy.

  • South African Model Christenn Cloe

    South African Model Christenn Cloe

    Hello 😉

I’m from South Africa, I’m an internationally published model and a mom to my son Connor.

Where did your inspiration to be a model come from?

My mom entered my images into competitions from a young age. When I got to high school, I became extremely shy so I stopped completely.

What is the toughest or most challenging photoshoot have you experienced before?

The most challenging shoot I had was with my favorite photographer Danny Steyn. It was my first nude shoot, I had no idea what to expect and I had to be beside an experienced Playmate.

How is a typical day like for yourself?

I have an engineering company with my partner, a typical day I would be at work till late in the night.

Do you have any favorite quotes or mottos you use?

“I think the female body is exquisite so, I don’t feel funny about nudity”

    Candice Swanepoel

If you could live the life of someone else for a week, who will you like to choose?

Taylor Selfridge, she is drop dead gorgeous, and down to earth.

On a scale of 1-10, how much of a party animal are you?

0, I don’t go to clubs at all, I’ve never been drunk, and not interested in that lifestyle.

What is a lame or awkward attempt a guy has tried to know you?

A guy created different Instagram profiles and tried with each one to contact me. I’ve seen catfish LOL so I Google searched the images and discovered the real person.

Thank you for taking the time to answer our questions Christenn. One question before we end, how do you define “sexy”?

When someone is direct, that is sexy to me. I’m not interested in six packs etc. I prefer someone that can make me laugh.

  • What It Takes To Be An Internationally Published Model

What It Takes To Be An Internationally Published Model

Since age 13, I was my best friends’ muse for art, over the years she photographed and painted me, some of her work that I had featured in was displayed in exhibitions and art shows. When I turned 18, a friend had recommended that I should join some modelling platforms and online websites, I gave it a go, added some photos of myself and overnight I had floods of messages from photographers asking to shoot with me and saying that they wanted to help me build my portfolio. I did some time for print, which is giving your time in exchange for images. After three times for print shoots someone asked for my hourly rate, I was confused and didn’t know what to charge. After a few months, I started gaining quite a lot of paid work for myself and I was published for the first time in January 2018.

I continued to model alongside my philosophy BA degree which was a great part-time job alongside my studies. When I graduated in Summer 2019 I went straight into full-time freelance modelling. I assumed it would only be for a month or so and now it’s eight months later and I have continued to remain a full calendar filled with photoshoot bookings. I have particular enjoyed doing tours around the UK and Europe and really enjoy doing studio days, portfolio builders and events.

Challenges I Face As A Model

My family weren’t pleased when I mentioned that I had got a huge interest online from modelling networking platforms and advised me not to meet up with photographers and organize shoots. I kept my first three months of modelling hidden from my family, snuck out in the early morning and did my makeup in public bathrooms for location shoots.

I first announced my modelling to my family once I was published. I still have issues and there is a huge stigma attached to modelling, especially glamour and lingerie, but my family are proud of me for making my own independent income, however I only share fashion images with my family and friends opposed to lingerie and implied imaged that I show to my fan base and showcase in my online portfolio.

    Photo: @lothosphotos / @auroraphoenixmodel

    Common Misconceptions About Modeling

You must join an agency to model? There are plenty of modelling networking sites and lots of ways to promote and market yourself online. There are lots of opportunities to gain paid gigs on your own accord. You can also go and message companies directly. I personally have been agency free for the full three years so far of my modelling career and have till managed to be involved in some big projects. However, being self-employed does take on a huge amount of responsibility; you have to take care of your own tax returns, promotional work and admin, organize your own schedule, sort out travel accommodation etc.

    Photo: @lothosphotos / @auroraphoenixmodel

Is The Modeling Industry Very Competitive?

Yes, the modelling industry is competitive. What I do to stand out is offer a completely varied and diverse portfolio. I do all sorts of modelling such as high-fashion, lingerie, pinup, vintage, boudoir, lifestyle and much more. I also always step outside my comfort zone and show people in the industry that I am not afraid to try new things. What I love about freelance modelling is creating your own castings and marketing your own ideas and projects. A lot of photographers don’t know what to shoot and some are blank for ideas, it’s up to you to present clients with as many options as possible when necessary.

    Photo: @johnleigh / @auroraphoenixmodel

    Advice For Aspiring Models

Practice by watching tutorials on how to pose, read books, work on your facial expressions and emotions within images. Do a lot of time for print work with photographers and collaborations to get your portfolio as diverse as possible. Don’t be afraid to put yourself out there and keep pushing, you will get there eventually.

  • Malaysian Model & Face of Malaysia, Gwen Chin

Malaysian Model & Face of Malaysia, Gwen Chin

Gwen Chin is a regular fixture in the Malaysian modelling industry ever since she won the Face of Malaysia 2012 title, after which she represented our country to compete at the annual Asia New Star Model Contest 2013 in Seoul, South Korea.

Not long after, she took a couple of years off for personal reasons but this oriental beauty, who stands at 175cm in height, made her modelling comeback around mid 2019, stronger and better!

During her time away from active modelling, she was also appointed the official Pageant Walk Coach for the Miss Astro Chinese International Pageant (from which the winner represents Malaysia at the annual Miss Chinese International pageant) from 2016 to date, consecutively.

Besides that, she is also actively teaches as a modelling instructor for both aspiring kids and adults.

Currently based as a full time model in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, Gwen is represented by boutique talent and model management company Evenstar Management.

Thank you for featuring me, SimplySxy!

I was born in Kota Kinabalu, Sabah; grew up in Kuching, Sarawak; and currently living in Kuala Lumpur. I’m just a simple and ordinary girl who loves fashion and lucky enough to be able to do what I love – modelling.

Where do you get your fashion inspiration from?

My fashion inspiration pretty much comes from various Malaysian fashion designers. To be honest, I did not have much fashion sense to begin with… It was only after I entered the modelling industry when I was 19 that I got exposed to the wonders of fashion and style. Getting to work with these talented and amazing designers really inspired my career as a model.

Do you have any favorite quotes or mottos you like to use?

The two quotes that I live by are simply “no pain, no gain”, and also “tasting the bitter at the beginning and feeling sweet at the end”. I believe very much in life, no matter how hard something can be, there will always be something good waiting for you at the end, somehow.

What if your proudest achievement so far?

I’m very proud to be a teacher who can help groom the future models of Malaysia, but my proudest achievement so far would be being a catwalk instructor for the Miss Astro Chinese International pageant, which is one of the biggest televised pageants in Malaysia.

On a scale of 1-10, how much of a foodie are you?

In terms of being a foodie, I don’t consider myself as one, so I’ll rate myself just a 5. I’m not much of a food hunter, so long as the food is good and it fills me up, I’m happy.

What have you always wanted to do but have yet to find the time for it?

This is a little tricky as I don’t really have a long bucket list… Whenever there is something that I want to do, I’ll make sure I’ll make time to go after it as soon as I can. But if I really have to choose, I would say what I want to do most is to have a nice long holiday.

If you could have a super power, what will it be?

The super power that I would like to have is mind reading. I’m sure this will help me a lot in my job as a model because when I attend castings, at least I will know what the casting directors are looking for exactly, helping me land jobs easily. Besides, I’m sure mind reading will improve my interpersonal skills and relationships too.

What is an ideal date to you?

My ideal date is not so much about the actual date itself but more of the person I’m going on that date with. As long as he is someone with positive vibes who can make me laugh all the time, any date with him will be ideal. And if he has dimples too, he gets bonus points!

Thank you for taking the time to answer our questions Gwen. One question before we end, how do you define “sexy”?

To me, sexy is about your temperament and how you carry yourself. Take Angeline Jolie for example, she never fails to be sexy even if she is dressed all covered up. I’m a huge fan of hers!

Thanks very much once again for having me, SimplySxy!

Hello! I am a model from New Jersey and I concentrate in fashion, print and commercial.

Do you have any hobbies or interests?

I do have a few hobbies, in my free time I dance, sing and exercise.

    What inspires your fashion style?

I look up to a few female singers and models who inspire my sense of style on a daily like Selena Gomez, Hailey Bieber, etc.

Which is the best compliment you have received?

Best compliment I have ever received has been people telling me how much of a great soul I have and how much I inspire them.

How will you describe a typical day like for yourself?

A typical day for me is being booked at least twice for the day with a clothing brand or music video, meeting new people and networking.

Is there something you’ve always wanted to do but have yet to find the time for it?

I have done a few acting gigs like comedy skits and a few commercials, but I would actually love to start in a movie and take some acting classes.

Have you been in an embarrassing situation before that is funny now when looking back?

I had a magazine shoot for the first time and I usually don’t wear fake nails so I went to the beauty supply and got myself the ones you press on and OMG, every time I pose, one of the nails would fall off haha. Totally embarrassing at the moment.

What is the funniest or lamest attempt a guy has tried to know you?

Lamest attempt would have been trying to make me believe that we know each other already to make a whole dialogue.

Thank you for taking the time to answer our questions Yuli. One question before we end, how do you define “sexy”?

I define sexy as empowerment, as women we can conquer the world with self love, when we show that sexy side we have we demonstrate power towards our body, towards our confidence and most importantly reflecting it on others, women and men.
