Presenter, Model & Actress Giorgia Vecchini

I was born and raised in Vigasio, a little town in the outskirts of Verona, the city of Romeo And Juliet.

My name is Giorgia Vecchini, and maybe you know me for my activity as a cosplayer, but that’s just the tip of the iceberg of my theater activity which extends also to being a voice talent for dubbing, audio recordings, theater and diction teaching, podcast, radio and everything you can think you could do with the voice.

I’ve also been a singer in the Eurobeat scene, with two songs published in the Eurobeat collections.

I’m a big expert of everything nerdy and pop about the 80s and I’m also a collector of things about anime, but not only, from the 80s and the 90s.

I currently hold the Guiness World Record for the largest Creamy Mami memorabilia collection.

How is your fashion style like and where do you draw your fashion inspiration from?

Well, I think you could define my style as casual, and my inspiration comes mainly from the 80s for which I have an endless love encompassing every aspect of my life, including my attire.

Of course what I draw from the 80s is what can be reinterpreted in the years we are living in, so no large shoulders, no too bright, fluo or glitter colors because I don’t want to look out of time, but there are elements I gladly pick and mix with modern ones. An example might be black leather leggings which I often pair with furry leg warmers and or a short skirt (a short skirt with leg warmers is one of the quintessential 80s looks).

Another thing I really love is one shoulder tops.

And then I like to throw my passion for anime, manga and pop culture (in a word, my nerd self) into the mix, wearing nerd themed T-shirts. I usually try to avoid the “loud” print of the character and I rather go for hidden references, writings, outlines, silhouettes, anything that brings the reference to the mind, instead of the “in your face” image.

I think it’s more chic and I also like to tease the memory of those looking, because it’s not so immediately evident, but when they get there the effect is way better.

And of course I try to keep up with the current trends. There are brands that I particularly love, one being for sure Denny Rose, which I’ve been following for quite a long time now and which manages to be both young and elegant while meeting my specific taste.

How long have you been modeling and what genres do you specialize in?

Well, I’ve been a cosplayer first, and that started in ‘97, so it has been more than 20 years now. Now although I’m slowly phasing out of the “playing” part, I’m still in the organization circle as artistic director, organizer and presenter for events.

I’m still modeling only from time to time, because when I used to do that, the photo shootings were in some ways always related to cosplaying or wearing a particular attire, like a female Santa Claus, a Japanese kimono or even something I am not usually drawn to like the goth look or the fancy elegant dress.

Nowadays I happen to have some modeling photo sessions, but they are more focused on trendy looks with the occasional shooting to advertise some nerdy T-shirts line.

Which is a memorable acting experience you have had so far?

If we are leaving out the performance with which I won the World Cosplay Summit, I had a pretty memorable experience filming “Gamers”, a sit-com for Gamestop which aired in their retail points throughout Italy for a few years.

I was this character that crashed the scene always to a comical effect.

Another experience I remember fondly is “Base Luna” (“Moon Base”), a late night show for the Italian national TV RAI, for which I interpreted the waitress of the space restaurant that was the main setting of the show.

It was a very versatile character that allowed me to wear a lot of different costumes in a wide array of situations ranging from a parody of the TV miniseries Romanzo Criminale to the bored, underpaid waitress, so it was really interesting to be there.

With so many interests and projects you have, how is a typical day like for yourself?

This is a very difficult question, because I really don’t have a typical day or a routine.

There are some periods of the year that go some ways and others are completely different.

During the lockdown, for example, I found myself doing something I had never thought I could, like being a teacher which of course led to a very different lifestyle from when I’m getting ready for an event or when I’m writing texts for a theater play or for one of the magazines I write for.

A period like this, for example is heavily focused on loads and loads of e-mails sent to various organizations to get ready for the next season of cosplay events that is going to start in September.

I might not look so, but an event extends far beyond the two or three days of the stage time, and everything has to be set well in advance to be ready at the right time.

The “get on stage” period is quite different, since I might go somewhere for two or three days for an avent, come back for just one day and then set off for another round somewhere else.

This frantic routine can go on for months.

Do you miss cosplaying now that you don’t do it anymore?

    No, not really.

First of all, I’m still in the loop as a presenter/organizer/expert, and secondly, the current state of the cosplay scene doesn’t reflect who I am and my approach to cosplay, so I don’t feel represented by the current protagonists of the scene.

The only regret I have is that I’m having a hard time separating my two personas, Giorgia Vecchini and Giorgiacosplay.

Despite not using my stage name any more, despite not wearing cosplays at events and gatherings and despite the fact that when I’m there I’m no longer there as a performer, but as a presenter or sometimes as an expert for panels, it is very difficult to get rid of the Giorgiacosplay overlay.

Maybe I’ve been Giorgiacosplay for so long that everybody remember me with that name.

I don’t want to recant the Giorgiacosplay phase, but I feel there’s so much more I can give and that is pushing to come out after living so many years in the shadows.

I hope, with time, to be able to convey this.

If you could time travel, what will you like to witness or experience?

Wow, this is a though one.

If I’m just a spectator, I think I would like to witness the asteroid impact that led to the extinction of the dinosaurs.

It must have been a blast.

What do you not get about the opposite sex?

There may be a lot of things, but on top of my head, I think I don’t get how they could ever find beautiful or attractive a woman who just woke up, with all her hair all over the place and a look that to me resembles Linda Blair in The Exorcist.

That will always be my “other great mystery of the universe” as Doc Brown would say.

Thank you for taking the time to answer our questions Giorgia. One question before we end, how do you define “sexy”?

If you are asking what I define sexy in someone else, well it’s an ensemble of qualities, not necessarily all physical, that somehow can get me involved.

Something along the teachings of Prince Akeem in Coming to America, when he said “I want a woman who will arouse my intellect as well as my loins.”

I have to be able to feel the affinity and the mutual discovery and the curiosity for each other, even despite different interests.

And the voice. Nothing beats a well structured, even a bit hoarse.

But sometimes, being sexy is something you don’t even realize and is made of many little unconscious details.

And let’s not forget that all this is personal: things that are sexy for someone can be the opposite for someone else. It’s all very relative.

  • Cosplayer & Artist Momo Kariño

    Cosplayer & Artist Momo Kariño

I started cosplaying in 2007, but didn’t really start making my own stuff until 2011. I love cosplay because it is a great way to meet fans of my favorite series, and make friends. Additionally, I’ve always been an artistic person, so the crafting and art that goes into making cosplays and making scenic character photos is an enjoyable pastime for me.

Which character have you enjoyed cosplaying most so far?

This is always a tough one to answer, since I’ve done so many characters, and love them all for different reasons. But some of my top faves are Sailor Jupiter, Space Faerie, Tess, and Yoko.

Do you follow a beauty regime to look so beautiful?

Not particularly, I actually used to struggle with acne a lot, even well into adulthood. Switching to some Korean brand of skin care products versus the U.S. drug store brands I was using seems to have helped. I’m also quite fond of hydrating masks!

What is your favorite food or drink?

French fries probably are my favorite food, though not an entirely nutritious meal, haha. But on the flip side, I love me a good, healthy smoothie.

If you could have a super power, what will it be?

I always thought it would be cool to have “ghost powers” like Danny Phantom does. But idk, that’s a lot of power and responsibility haha. So maybe just the power to find all lost things, that would be sort of neat. I’m always losing things, so I think often about where they must have ended up. It’s like they disappear into thin air!

Are you more of a lingerie or bikini babe?

I love summer, swimming, and the beach, so it’s bikinis for me! Plus they’re generally more comfortable. Well, sometimes. XD

What turns you off on a date?

Whenever anyone seems to dismiss my hobbies and passions, or think they’re weird, it probably won’t work out. I like to say conventions and cosplay are “my full time hobby”, so if they want a “sexy cosplay GF” but  think cosplay is something that only happens at comic con, they’re in for a big awakening…

*points to dozens of bins of fabric*

Thank you for taking the time to answer our questions Momo. One question before we end, how do you define “sexy”?

I think sexy simply lies in confidence. Not just in one’s looks, but in everything else too. Of course, it is crucial to balance that confidence with humility, but ultimately, I think a lot of my admiration comes from seeing people just comfortably be themselves.

  • California Cosplayer & Model Spacebear

    California Cosplayer & Model Spacebear

Hello everyone! I’m a California based model/cosplayer and have been here pretty much all my life. I’m sure you can tell from my account but I love putting together outfits and makeup looks as well as doing cosplays!

How is your fashion style like and where do you love to shop from?

Hmmm, it’s really hard to pin down a specific style I have since it varies so much – one day I’ll be in all black and huge boots and the other, I’ll be in florals and heels. I guess you could call it a cross between grunge and soft fem!

Do you have any hobbies or interests?

I love gaming and drawing haha, though I haven’t had much time for either. My favorite games would probably be the Dark Souls series and Alice Madness Returns. I do some illustrations in my free time but now I stick to painting portraits.

Which is the best compliment you have received?

I once had someone tell me that the way I think was like a dance.

What are 3 fun things do you recommend to tourists to do when visiting your city?

I’m from San Francisco so there’s no shortage of things to do here, but I’d recommend hitting up Fisherman’s Wharf, going thrifting in all the little shops around town and trying as much food as they can from all the neighborhoods!

Which are your favorite quotes or mottos you like to use for inspiration?

    Baddabing Baddaboom 😀

Would you rather have the power to control objects or animals?

Objects, I wouldn’t like to take control away from a living being. Though it would be nice to force them to sit with me at times haha.

Thank you for taking the time to answer our questions Space. One question before we end, how do you define “sexy”?

It’s a mindset. People get bent out of shape when a non-conventionally attractive person calls themselves sexy but honestly thinking that way is pretty unsexy. If you feel hot then you’re hot.

  • HongKong Cosplayer SsinN

    HongKong Cosplayer SsinN

Hello, thank you so much for featuring me on SimplySxy, it’s a pleasure for me too. I’m a cosplayer from Hong Kong, my favourite anime is Evangelion. It is the very first anime that got me into the whole anime world, my favourite character is Mari Makinami Illustrious. I make most of my costumes and weapons, my very first cosplay ever was Yu Kanda from D.Gray Man.

What do you love about cosplay and how long have you been cosplaying?

I have been cosplaying for 15 years, mainly anime / game characters. What I love about cosplay is that I am able to bring my favourite characters to life by making their outfits, their weapons and to imagine myself as them during photoshoots. Also, I love taking photos in places with spectacular views with my cosplay.

Which character have you enjoyed cosplaying most before?

The character I have enjoyed cosplaying the most is Kiana Kaslana from Honkai Impact 3rd.

Is it challenging to create a costume and the props from scratch?

It certainly is, bear in mind anime and game characters are created to fit their story’s aesthetics and not drawn to let you cosplay them. How to keep the character’s look as original as possible and how to adapt them to real life is a true challenge.

What other hobbies and interests do you have?

I enjoy taking photos, not as a model, but as a photographer. I enjoy taking street photos and to shoot in film, FYI my favourite film camera is Rollei 35, and I have 8 of them.

If you could have a super power, what will it be?

I know not many like the film, but I do like the power of the Green Lantern ring. I can create anything from nothing as long as I have a strong will, and I have a super strong will when I know the deadline to conventions is like only hours away. LOL.

Would you rather have the ability to control objects or teleport?

Teleport, so I don’t have to spend time getting stuck in traffic.

What do you not get about guys?

Everything~ haha~ I think one gender can never understand another.

Thank you for taking the time to answer our questions SsinN. One question before we end, how do you define “sexy”?

I think sexy is not just taking off clothes and flashing your body, it is the vibe a person gives. Being confident is sexy. I believe whatever you wear can be sexy as long as you have that confidence in your eyes.

  • Canadian Cosplayer & Model Whitney Lau

Canadian Cosplayer & Model Whitney Lau

I am Whitney from Ontario, Canada. I am 25 years old, and I work at a sleep clinic. In my spare time, I cosplay and do freelance modeling.

How will you describe your fashion style and where do you draw inspiration from?

I have yet to find a way to perfectly describe my fashion style in one word, but I would say my style is cute and anime-like. My outfits are usually pastel or all black. Miniskirts, thigh-high socks, and high heels are always a signature part of my look. I draw inspiration from anime characters or outfits worn by celebrity women.

Do you have any hobbies or interests?

Not only do I love modeling and cosplaying, but I also love dancing. Before the pandemic, I took dance classes 3-4 times a week. My favourite dance styles are urban sexy pop, jazz funk, and heels. Another hobby of mine is trying new foods, drinks, and desserts. In fact, before I focused on cosplaying and modeling, my Instagram used to be a lot of food photography. Nowadays, I am still that person who likes to take a lot of pictures of their food before eating it.

What is a typical day like for you?

On weekdays, I work at the clinic but on weekends, I usually have a photoshoot scheduled. I start my morning with skincare and preparing what I need for the shoot. Then, I get my hair and makeup done either by myself or the makeup artist that I am working with. The shoot is either outdoors or at a studio which usually lasts for a few hours. Afterwards, I would go get food and drinks with friends before heading back home at night.

Which is your favorite or go to drink at a club?

I have a sweet tooth so I pretty much love anything that is sweet!  My go to shots would be polar bear shots!

Would you rather be able to teleport or read minds?

I would rather be able to teleport so that I could easily travel to all the places I want to visit around the world. I would not have to deal with long flights, and I could save the money that would have been spent on plane tickets for something else!

If you could learn anything in this world, what will it be?

I would learn every language in the world so that I could communicate with everyone I meet without being restricted by language barriers. This would go great with the ability to teleport!

What turns you off on a date?

Men who are too self-absorbed and spend the entire date just talking about themselves.

Thank you for taking the time to answer our questions Whitney. One question before we end, how do you define “sexy”?

I would define “sexy” as exuding confidence and charisma regardless of what you are wearing. I believe that you can be completely covered up but still have an aura of “sexiness”.

  • Cosplayer, Model & Artist Elie

    Cosplayer, Model & Artist Elie

Hey! I am a Filipina / Vietnamese currently based in Singapore! I am a cosplayer, host, streamer, model and artist. I love anime, manga and games.

How is your fashion style like and where do you take inspiration from?

My fashion style is very comfy. At home, I love wearing oversized shirts and short shorts. People are often misled that I love fashion since I do a lot of fashion shoots. Unfortunately, I am actually a fashion disaster. I just wanna wear pyjamas everywhere I go~ I usually bring indoor clothes when I visit some friends. I also love wearing socks and slippers hahahaha.

I can dress up every now and then if I actually wanted too, Korean and Japanese aesthetics are my go to but I am still the type that puts comfort above everything else…well maybe except cosplay. 😉

Do you follow a regular beauty or exercise regime?

I am the type that invests on skincare more than make up. A good base does so much wonders.

I am horrible at exercise and outdoor activities though. I have the face of an 18 year old but the physical strength of a 65 year old lady.

I often spend my days indoors and all my hobbies are indoors, I’d even go as far to say that I do not like going outside; the only exceptions are work and meeting my loved ones.

Is there any food or drink you absolutely don’t take?

I love the smell and taste of coffee, unfortunately, it makes me feel really really bad so I do avoid it.

What hobbies or interests do you have?

Oh where do I start… Besides cosplaying, I love watching anime, reading manga, drawing illustrations, playing games, dancing, singing and sleepinggg. I love sleeping!

I also started doing clay art recently. I think I am a creative peson at heart, I might take a break every now and then but I would still go back to something creative to express myself.

If you could choose to remove one misconception forever, what will it be?

It would be really nice if people stop judging cosplayers based on some stereotypes and assumptions. I want people to see the positive things in cosplay.

Cosplay brings me so much happiness! Dressing up as some of my most loved characters always feel amazing!

    Which flavor best describes you?

Choco Mint! Some people love or hate this flavor~

It is what it is! I like the contrast of taste and I feel like it represents my ever changing personality.

What turns you off on a date?

Hmmmm when I used to go on dates it was always either a yes or no. Nothing in between. I am a very decisive person when it comes to human relationships.

If I had to pick a turn off, it would be as simple as if you’re not a gentleman, then byeeeee~

Thank you for taking the time to answer our questions Elie. One question before we end, how do you define “sexy”?

Being sexy is the ability to capture people’s attention through style, poise and attitude.

  • Russian Cosplayer So Hyun

    Russian Cosplayer So Hyun

Hey, howdy hi! I’m Batman…Ahaha, I’m kidding! ^_^ I’m a cosplayer, bookblogger, engineer, nerd and Nutella lover from Russia with love! ♥

My name So Hyun was coined by my friends from Korea, with whom I had studied language courses at Ural Federal University. They often said that any name (and any pseudonym) determines the fate of a person and amateur methods of choosing is completely unacceptable. So they asked for help from a fortune teller from Hongdae street (at the Hongik-ro intersection) to choose a traditional name for me so it would bring me  some luck, protect me and help me with work.  That name has been my mascot ever since.

How long have you been cosplaying and how did you get started?

I’ve been in cosplay since 2012. Wonderful masterpieces of Hayao Miyazaki inspires me to cosplay. I had cosplayed Chihiro («Spirited Away»), Ponyo («Ponyo on the Cliff by the Sea»), Kiki («Kiki’s Delivery Service»), and Sophie («Howl’s Moving Castle»). I have plans to do Arietti («Kari-gurashi no Arietti») and San («Princess Mononoke»), please wish me good luck with that♥

Which are some of your favorite characters you have cosplayed so far?

My favorite (and also my first) full cosplay – Sophie Hatter ((«Howl’s Moving Castle»).

What content do you create and blog about?

For me, cosplay is not just a hobby, but also a way to promote my favorite books and reading itself. I really like books, I reeealy like reading, so cosplay and books exist in a single format for me. My main goal is to inspire people to read really good books about strong and colorful characters with an inner core and the role that «personality» plays in presenting to audience. So I like my cosplays on Sophie («Howl’s Moving Castle»), Lily Potter («Harry Potter») and Alma Peregrine («Miss Peregrine’s Home for Peculiar Children») because they were always strong-minded, brave, intelligent and ready for self-scarified girls.

I always admire strong and independent women, they are an inexhaustible source of inspiration for me. As long as my cosplay serves as a bright tool to be interested in books, to search for the original source of images and just enjoy myself, I will try my best to serve the benefit of young people who like to read.

Where do you get your blogging inspiration from?

In books, manga, movies, k-dramas, anime, video games, and even in paintings (both classics and modern authors). Inspiration is everywhere, even in food ^_^

If you could be a cartoon character for real, who will you be?

    Velma Dinkley («Scooby-Doo! »). 100% personality match.

How do you like to spend your free time?

In addition to reading books, I really like to play «Dungeons & Dragons» with friends, or once again review «Monty Python and the Holy Grail» or «Twin Peaks». I also like to sit in the park knitting sweaters and hats, as well as playing videogames on PS4 (I’m a fan of GTA and Red Dead Redemption).

What turns you off on a date?

Rude behavior with other people, inadequate unjustified self-assessment, and of course an unhealthy love to alcohol.

Thank you for taking the time to answer our questions So Hyun. One question before we end, how do you define “sexy”?

I feel that being sexy is an attribute with which I was born. We were all born with it. Sexuality is about individuality, uniqueness, and your own style. Sexy comes with an attitude of confidence and being comfortable with one’s body with your best features.

Thank you very much for the opportunity, it was a very interesting interview and an amazing opportunity to get to know SimplySxy and tell a little about myself.

    You are super!

  • Talented Russian Cosplayer Hackee

    Talented Russian Cosplayer Hackee

Hello! My name is Hackee, I’m 20 years old and I’m a cosplayer from Russia.

What got you interested into cosplay in the first place?

At school, I became interested in anime. I followed a lot of anime groups on social media and one day I saw a post with photos of some cosplayer and I was definitely impressed. I found that cosplay is a good way to express your love for an anime series or for a specific character.

At that time, I associated myself with Taiga from Tora Dora and the cosplay of her became my first one. I really wanted to show how much I feel with the character.

Which are some difficulties or challenges you usually face when preparing for a cosplay?

To be honest, styling the wig is still a big challenge for me. I’m bad at wig making and I only cope with simple tasks like cutting the bangs or sewing two wigs together. If I need to make something more complicated (e.g. Akali’s or Catra’s wig), I rely on a professional wigmaker.

If you could be a cartoon character for real, who will you choose to be?

Ruby Rose! She is one of my favorite characters.

The idea of being a petite girl with heavy and powerful weapon in my hands inspires me for some reason. Ruby is the leader with the strong sense of justice and reliable friend. I strive to be like her: trustworthy, kind and decisive.

How do you like to spend your free time if you are not cosplaying?

Besides cosplay, I do my studies. I am a university student, so I spend a lot of time on learning foreign languages and reading educational literature. One of my hobbies is also related to languages: I like to do literary translations of some stories from Portuguese to Russian.

I also enjoy watching anime and TV series and reading books.

Would you rather have the ability to stop time or control objects?

I would like to have the ability to stop time. I think it is more useful and could help to avoid many mistakes, get into places that you’re not allowed to enter.

On a scale of 1-10, how much of a foodie are you?

7/10. I enjoy food for pleasure. I like to try new dishes and new tastes. And I would never miss the opportunity to eat out.

What is a funny or awkward attempt a guy has tried to know you?

I don’t even remember any really awkward or funny situation, but there was a guy who just after saying his name started to show me his photos from the gym. Like «here I do push-ups, here I do sits-ups and there I do pull-ups». Probably it should have impressed me, but no, it didn’t.

Thank you for taking the time to answer our questions Hackee. One question before we end, how do you define “sexy”?

Being “sexy” is being confident about yourself and your appearance, it’s the perception of the human body as an object of art, it’s showing your best sides without overdoing it.

  • What It Takes To Be A Cosplayer

What It Takes To Be A Cosplayer

For me cosplay is for fun, it’s about expressing the things you love. Making your favorite characters into real life, you can meet a ton of amazing people who like the same things and grow into a friendship, and learn so many new things (make up, making costume, acting, etc).

In my opinion, there’s absolutely nothing wrong with cosplay. It’s a fun hobby and a way to express yourself, so don’t be shy or afraid with other people judgement.

There are lots of great reasons to cosplay, and while I have several I can point to, the real driving force for me has been self-confidence. I spent many years of my youth feeling awkward, ugly and unwanted. Cosplay has helped turn that around. It’s helped me be more comfortable not only with my outward appearance, but to be more confident emotionally.

How I Got Started Into Cosplay

I love watching anime, reading manga and playing games since I was a child. And I’ve dreamt of what if my favorite characters appeared to me in real life. But in the past, I didn’t have any friends who had the same hobbies with me.

I’m an introvert person, and I’m too shy to express my love towards the things I like. When I grew up, I finally was brave to express the things I liked and decided to go to anime conventions (and in that time I still had no friends to go to anime convention with me).

This was the first time I saw cosplayers and was fascinated. They were so cool, they looked happy to become the character they liked and I wanted to be like that too. I wanted to make my favorite characters come into real life too, I wanted to have friends to share what I liked without feeling like a weird person, and I wanted to have confidence too.

So, I started cosplaying in 2017. I cosplayed as Suzumiya Haruhi and went to anime convention alone. I looked like a lost kid in that place LOL.

But I’m very grateful and never have a single regret. That time many people wanted to take photos with me, and after that they were so happy. I’m happy because I’m doing the things I like and I can make other people happy too. What a blessing. I want to cosplay until I’m old.

Overcoming Challenges As A Cosplayer To Be Successful

Sometimes there are people who assume that cosplaying is stupid, silly, and childlike. They say it’s a waste of time and money, weird, etc. And there will be people who judge you that “your cosplay is so ugly because you are ugly”, bodyshamming, etc. So, in other words, many people will be judges and critic you a lot.

But as you know, don’t ever hear what they say, as many people will support you too. Hear their suggestions that make your cosplay improve and don’t hear what makes you down.

I’m doing what makes me happy and I can learn so many things from that. I always remember that I can’t make EVERYONE happy, there always will be people who dislike cosplay or hate me for no reason. So, don’t think about it too much, do what you like and keep moving forward.

I have a full-time job and it’s taking up the majority of my time. It can be hard to come home from a long day at work and have the energy or focus to styling wigs, making costumes, and doing other things. Actually you can buy costumes too but sometimes, costumes don’t quite fit right just out of the box and you need to fix it. But, I enjoy what I do. Cosplay is my work too, I have been invited as a guest star, influencer and performer in many conventions also invited me as judge in cosplay competitions. So I try to balance my full time job and my part time job as a cosplayer with better time management.

What Is The Cosplay Community Like?

The cosplay community is fun, it’s a place where you can share your favorite anime, game, manga, or cosplay tips. It is a way to find new friends who have the same interests with you.

But like any other community, you also find many different people in there. You can’t force them to instantly like you, once again, there are people who will dislike you no matter what you are doing. But don’t worry, there are a bunch of kind people too.

So, just enjoy the community, enjoy the cosplay, and have fun.

4 Things People Should Know More About Cosplay

Cosplay is never consent. Always ask first to hug or pose with someone, and never touch them without their permission. Every cosplayer puts time and effort into their work. Never pick up or handle their props without their permission

Always ask permission before taking photos or videos of other cosplayers. Most might not mind it, but everyone wants to know first if they’re on camera.

If you’re cosplaying, remember that you’re representing a character loved and looked up to by fans. Keep it classy, and don’t do or say anything that might tarnish their image of that character.

And I wish everyone can freely cosplay without worry about society judgement. I wish people don’t think of cosplay as weird, silly, childish, etc.

Tokyo Based Singer Songwriter Syrena Quills

My name is Sarina, but I go as Syrena (pronounced the same) online! I’m Lebanese-Japanese and I live in Tokyo.

What inspired you to be a singer songwriter?

My whole family is made of performers, my mothers a dancer and my father a singer. I guess growing up around the industry it really opened my eyes to this burning passion for performance I had!

Which is a memorable performance you have done before that you enjoyed every minute of it?

My first professional musical! I was 12 and terrified during my audition, and convinced I didn’t get it but three weeks later I was told that I had gotten the lead role. The rehearsals were gruelling but on opening night… the curtains lifted, the lights hit my face and the music started. It was amazing!! I shared the role so I performed opening night, a Saturday matinee and then closing night. We got standing ovations every time!!! I look back on those days and cry sometimes…

How many characters have you estimated to have cosplayed and do you have any favorites?

I haven’t cosplayed all that much in all honesty. I’ve done two characters from Love Live (school idol project), I did a cosplay of a vampire named Krul Tepes from Seraph of the end. And then two versions of Hatsune Miku! My favourite is probably Hatsune Miku!

What are 3 fun things you like to do in the city you live in?

I love love love love love cafe culture here!! So one of my favourite things to do is just to go cafe crawling, looking for cute and hidden cafes and enjoying a nice cup of house blend coffee. Sometimes with a friend, sometimes alone. I also love aimlessly walking around, you find incredibly interesting things when you aren’t actually looking, so I do that a lot when I go on street shoots. And lastly, I’d say I enjoy karaoke with friends!

Which movie or TV show did you watch recently and do you recommend it?

I’ve been in a slump recently so I’ve been rewatching some anime. I recently rewatched Made In Abyss which I think is fantastic! A tad dark so be careful. And then I’m also watching the Great British Baking Show! It’s very relaxing but don’t watch it when you’re hungry!

Is there any food or drink you can’t live without?

I’m pretty health conscious so I’d say my favourite food are kind of boring, but I am absolutely addicted to caffeine!! Without my daily three coffees I cannot survive haha.

What is a lame attempt a guy has tried to know you before?

Oh god… there’s so many…. I don’t remember most of them because they aren’t quite worth remembering. In all honesty? The worst ones are when people just straight up say “hey are you waiting for someone? Are you single? Want to grab a drink?”, when I’m just walking or standing someplace.

It happens really often and I guess I find the approach dull and unoriginal. If you had a really hilarious pick up line that was obviously a joke, or an insightful question, a nice compliment, that already makes a huge difference.

Thank you for taking the time to answer our questions Syrena. One question before we end, how do you define “sexy”?

I think in this day, the word “Sexy” is widely appropriated to mean “sexual.” But something can be sexy without being inherently sexual! So to me I find independence, mental and emotional maturity, intellect and a will to learn incredibly sexy. When someone shows me that they have their life together or are actively working to better themselves, that shows a lot of strength of heart and that’s very much sexy.
