I was born and raised in Tokyo, Japan. I have lived in the U.S. and I LOVE travelling, especially to countries overseas.

What is your proudest achievement so far?

I would have to say my study abroad experience in the U.S. is what I’m most proud of. I received a scholarship and I studied so hard before and throughout the entire experience. Many people go to study abroad nowadays, but I really had the time of my life challenging myself, having new experiences, and growing up with amazing people there.

Jumping into somewhere you don’t understand the language and culture can be scary but it definitely was one of the best decisions I’ve ever made! Not only did it change my mind, it also had a huge impact on my style, beliefs, confidence, and life vision. I can honestly say that I am who I am now because of the experience.

Do you have any favorite quotes which you like to use in life?

“All roads lead to Rome.”

Shortly after coming home to Japan, I joined a company and began to lose sight of the path for what I want to do in my life. It was unbearable and I decided to quit my job. I went to Paris by myself to reset my mind to get a fresh restart on life.

A guy who I met in Paris told me this quote. All roads lead to Rome; to me it means that there is always a way to achieve your goal even if something didn’t work. (If you know where you want to go, you will eventually make it there whichever the path you take).

A year after that, when I went to Rome with my mother, I bought this leather bracelet with this quote written in French, but… I accidentally left it at the hotel. I was so sad but I just thought it means something. I know I need to make it to Rome, to get it back.

Which is the best compliment you have received?

Hmmmm when I posted a movie of me walking around in Italy on Instagram, this guy left a comment “You are a princess Haruna, you deserve 24/7 protection”. Haha I thought it was unique.

I also appreciate every single comment on Instagram so much and I try to reply to all of them!

How will you describe your fashion style?

I try to focus on the way that my clothes fit my silhouette and am particular about how the colors match with my skin tone. I often enjoy having themes for my OOTD. I pick up fashion trends from all over the world and try to dress like a local wherever I go to. For example, when planning to go to nature-rich countryside, I would wear denim with a plaid shirt as if I was from the American countryside, or try to wear a princess-like flared skirt when in Europe. It’s just really fun to match the OOTD and the place you are in especially when travelling. I also get inspiration from celebrity’s outfits and some YouTubers’ channel.

If you could change one thing about the world, what will it be?

I would like to get rid of all kinds of discrimination.

People are different in so many ways. I just think that we should celebrate our uniqueness more, not discriminate each other based on it. I believe in the beauty of discovering the differences among people/countries and one of my life’s themes is to explore the world and see different cultures. It goes without saying, but I think that diversity is wonderful.

Even the disability should be like “different ability” since I read that “If ropes were standard in getting to the second floor, could you as you are now climb it and make it to the second floor? If no, would you call it a disability? How about the people in wheelchairs who cannot climb the stairs.” Our standards are based too much on what is the most common, forgetting that there are always alternate possibilities that are just as pragmatic.

What flavor would you say best describes you?

Chocolate mint… I guess? Lol That’s what my best friend told me. I actually had never thought of that. Haha but when I asked my best friend, she said that I am like chocolate mint because it has sweet parts but overall it has a unique and cool flavor. I honestly think it perfectly describes myself though. Lol

Funniest or lamest attempt a guy has tried to know you?

A foreign guy asked me of the destination on the street and ended up being so annoyingly persistent that I gave in and exchanged contact information with him. Ever since that time he hasn’t stop texting me with super long “I can give you a million dollars and we can live together” kind of text in obviously automatically translated Japanese (which makes no sense). He didn’t even try to speak English nor Japanese and just sent the same message once every month… and yes, I ended up blocking him…

I think “sexy” is about having confidence and maybe also being strong. In Japan, we do not have the same definition of sexy as the one popularized in western cultures. Instead it is more closely correlated to being erotic and is limited to visual aspects of an individual.

But, I think it’s not just about showing more skin or a specific way that you dress. It’s about the way you carry yourself, the atmosphere you have, and being strong mentally, emotionally, with intelligence.

Role Play For The Day

It’s my pleasure. I’m a half-Japanese, half-American model, blogger and musician from southern California currently located in Tokyo, Japan. I actually didn’t think I would become a model or even work and live in Japan when I was still in school – I’ve studied classical piano until I graduated from UCLA with a B.A. in Piano Performance.

But during my last few years in college, I luckily had some modeling opportunities, which kind of sparked the idea. I wanted to try something different, and put myself in a completely different environment. I moved to Tokyo the same year I graduated, and I’ve been here since.

How do you manage to juggle your blog, modeling and music?

I think the reason why it’s possible is because I love doing them all. My blog especially takes a lot of work, but I’m really fortunate that I’ve had so many people be willing to take part in my blog, which is the reason why it’s grown so much. I couldn’t have done it myself. In terms of music, it’s not really constant at the moment but I have some upcoming projects that I am excited about.

Can you describe a typical day for yourself?

Every day is different for me so I don’t really have a “typical” day… I do make sure I have a healthy breakfast to start my day while I watch the morning news. I’ll check my blog and social media, get ready for my day, maybe run errands… sometimes if I have a shoot, it might be an all day, all night thing. Sometimes I’ll go to an event or party, sometimes I’ll work on my blog and create content for it. I actually do a lot of odd jobs so it depends on the day.

What inspires you?

Music always inspires me. It moves me, it heals me… it’s empowering. I’m glad I’ve had music by my side my entire life. If you were to ask who inspires me, I’d have to say my mother. While I do what I do for myself, as selfish as it seems, I also do all that I do for her because I want to make her proud. When there are times where I just can’t lift my head up, she’s the one that lifts me so I can start over again.

Which is the biggest compliment you have received?

That I look like Cleopatra (laughs).

If you could have one chance to look into the future, what will you want to know?

If I will have any children. I’m seriously getting worried if I’ll even get married!

How is the dating scene different in California as compared to Tokyo?

Hmmm, in my experience, quite different. When I was dating guys in the States, it was never difficult to express my feelings, to say, “I love you.” I dated one Japanese guy since moving to Tokyo and wow, what a difference! Sometimes, I couldn’t even read his mind, and even if I said, “I love you,” he would barely reciprocate in the way I was used to. His excuse was he wasn’t accustomed to the “American” way of dating. It was very frustrating 90% of the time to be honest.

What do you find most attractive about the opposite sex?

Kindness.

Japanese “erotic” game shows are not what you think

So the Web has been abuzz about the novelty of Japanese erotic game shows. The girl in the above picture, in example, is an Idol no ana contestant doing her best in one of the many licking tryouts in a show whose title literally translates as ‘The hole of an idol’ – where ‘idol’ is the Japanese term for a talentless but good looking girl catapulted at a very early age into a career of singing, then softcore modeling followed by harder and harder porn videos and, rarely, a second run as a minor television celebrity.

Girls fight off for a chance to become next year’s biggest idol, and they are subjected to many allusive tests among which the aforementioned lickings, sucking stuff from tubes, disrobing mannequins without using their hands and openly changing into cosplay costumes – freezing mid-gesture whenever they are told to, to allow a lecherous cameraman to better expose them.

The other video is even more shocking. That’s the highlights reel from Orgasm wars: a 40-minutes long contest to see whether a fat, male gay bar owner can manage to get a male porn star to come using all his secret fellatio techniques. Even if the crotch area is hidden by a small screen it is as graphic as you are imagining (not to mention the veryweird sounds of it all), with a commenter giving a moment-by-moment account of the action.

I’ll spoil this for you: the bar owner wins and the star reluctantly comes. Just like contestant number three in this older game show about… er… sucking off microphones while hidden brushes stimulate the contestants between their legs? That’s not even half as bizarre as the ass-kissing show in the third clip, or the quiz show where people give their answers while whipped by a dominatrix, or… well, you get the idea. But what does it all mean?

Japan has many unusual customs to westerners’ eyes, that’s true. But equally true is that it isn’t half as crazy as our media paint it – especially when it comes to sex. It’s just a matter of context. To understand three quarters of it you just have to remember that it is a Shintoist and Buddhist country, blissfully free of the absurd sense of guilt and shame the Christian, Jew and Islamic religions impose on sex and sexuality. As soon as genitals are just another body part and sex is just a common, everyday activity, approaching it playfully and publicly appears much more reasonable. Shows like Idol no ana do receive some flak by moralists, but most people see them as nothing more than one variation among many – on the same plane with cooking, fitness or music shows.

The second important aspect to consider is how Japan remains a very formal society. Just look at the beginning of the Orgasm wars clip: a differently-oriented stranger comes up to forcibly suck you off before cameras, and the normal reaction is to politely exchange business cards, bow and very quietly state that you won’t succumb to his techniques. Most American males would have run away shouting insults, terrorized they had “turned gay” just because they were in the same room as one. Most game shows are not about skill, but about not losing face – that is, keep your honor and your family’s high even in the face of adversity. Accepting any challenge, no matter how weird, is a big part of it.

Knowing all of this, eastern kinky shows take on a very different meaning. They can be shocking, controversial and ridiculous, but not as alien as they look at a first glance. After all, it is just a matter of remembering that everybody lives sex in a different way – and until they remain safe, sane and consensual, no interpretation is “better” than the others.

The Amateur Prostitutes in Japan
Not many people talk publicly about prostitution in Japan, although it has become a big social issue. These days, online prostitution and matchmaking cafes have caught a lot of attention. It seems that online prostitution has been the subject of debate in many countries. That’s the case with Japan.

Many amateurs resort to prostitution at dating sites because of poverty or other various reasons. Government surveys show one third of young and unmarried girls suffer from poverty today. The current going rate is roughly 20,000 yen. I think it’s neither expensive nor inexpensive, and it’s a very good price.

Women prostitutes try to get things done as soon as possible. They make various efforts to shorten the time to spend with customers. For example, just after entering a room, they contact someone and ask them to e-mail them in around 20 minutes. Their cell phone rings and they tell a lie that they have to go back immediately because of this or that.

Details of online profiles are filled with lies. Many women seem to think that after meeting in person, few things matter. On the other hand, you could encounter an attractive women without any lie on the net for such prostitutes are a rare bunch of individuals. Anything goes.

There are also some news reports on organized online prostitution. First, they gather women; it’s not clear how they do so. Then, they post comments on bulletin boards of dating sites like PCMAX, Happy Mail or 194964, in order to attract possible customers. These sites have millions of users and their boards are updated every two or three minutes. Just one post becomes unseen by others in an instant. They have to post countless comments all day, day in and day out in order to get attention. Of course, women don’t want to stuck to such a boring job. They take the place of them and tell them where to go, and then get kickbacks when they come back.

As a matter of fact, several years ago, a teenage girl was arrested for running an organized online prostitution. She forced younger girls to sell their bodies and even trained them to improve their skill of blowjob skills using bananas. It might sound imprudent, but I thought she was great. You could say that she knew the importance of marketing and customer satisfaction, and successfully operated a business. Reports read that she earned several million yen.

In addition, matchmaking cafes made the news a few years ago. They still have been doing business openly today. The current laws can’t deal with them. First of all, women wanting to meet someone enters a cafe, which has a spacious female-only room where snacks and soft drinks are free. There are some cameras in there so that male customers can look through to choose who to go out with. When they find an attractive girl, they tell the staff in order to have a chat with her in a private room. In most cases, women ask them how much they can pay or suggest a desired price. When the deal is done, men have to pay a close fee to the cafe. They could just dine together, and some seriously want to meet a partner. However, most of them try to do prostitution as they are in need of cash.

The cafes claim that they just provide places to meet others, and that they have no intention to facilitate wrongdoing. Otherwise, you can meet pimps fairly easily at places dense with sex establishments. If you’d like to meet them seriously, you might walk around there just after midnight. Every single sex clubs with a front desk have to close exactly then. They have women ready. The night is not over yet. They see possible customers walking around. Who cares? Just a little bit would be fine…

On the other hand, big groups don’t think like that, but some small business owners seem to do so. Prostitution has always been around and the sex business won’t disappear. You can start it with modest resources. It targets a very strong desire. It’s often said in Japan’s sex industry that “when one goes broke, two launch anew.” The total number of clubs don’t decrease and I guess the adult world will continue to flourish inconspicuously.
