Singapore Model Hilda Tan

Hi Hilda, thank you for taking the time to answer our questions.  Please share with our readers a little about yourself and where you’re from?

Thank you SimplySxy for featuring me. Hi everyone, my name is Hilda and I am born and bred in Singapore. Currently a final year student in Curtin University, I major in Human Resource Management and Management. I am also a freelance model and an ex Miss Singapore.

I am a huge shopaholic. If shopping was an Olympic sport, I’d be the next Joseph Schooling haha! I think shopping is really a great therapy for me and it makes me really happy when I buy nice stuff.

Shopping overseas is my favorite. Every single time I go on a trip, I’d come back to Singapore with my luggage filled with all my loots. Sometimes I’d buy so much that I have to ship some stuff back to Singapore before my flight. There was once I went on a holiday with my mom to Paris and we bought so much that our luggages were overweight and had to pay so much for over baggage but still, it was so worth it. My dream is to have a walk-in closet filled with all my collection of fashion items, just like that of Jamie Chua’s.

How will you describe your fashion style?

I would say my style is pretty versatile. On days that I’d like to be dressed in something more casual, I’d opt for street fashion and other days I’d go all glamourous and high fashion. But one thing about my style is that it’s never simple. I am very vain so I make it a point to dress up every single day before stepping out of my house. That means, clothes and make up must both be on point.

When it comes to dressing up, I always have this quote in mind, “People will stare. Make it worth their while.”

What is a typical day like for yourself?

Juggling school and work is really not an easy thing to do at all so my schedule is pretty packed most of the time and sometimes it gets so busy that I wouldn’t even have time to eat, especially on days that I have photo shoots and events to attend. I think I finally understand what it means when people say 24 hours a day is not enough.

On my typical rest day, which is not quite like a rest day because I’d still be busy with other things, I like to sleep in for a bit more just to make sure my body gets sufficient rest and I’d usually make use of the time to catch up with my school work.

Apart from that, I also really enjoy drinking so I spend a lot of my free nights drinking and chilling with my friends. Many people have the stereotypical mindset that girls do not like beer but I am the exact opposite because my all time favorite drink has to beer! Beer and fries is my favorite combo.

What is your proudest accomplishment so far?

My proudest accomplishment so far is being a finalist of Miss Singapore International 2015. Although I wasn’t crowned in my first pageant, it has taught me so much and allowed me to experience so much that I would otherwise not have.

I grew up watching pageant competitions aired on TV and I always envied how beautiful and confident those contestants look on stage. It has always been a childhood dream of mine to be like those contestants one day.

The decision to eventually join such a large scale pageant, apart from chancing upon it online, was also because I really wanted to push myself to step out of my comfort zone. I am really glad that my family and friends were very supportive too.

So far, I have taken part in two pageants, Miss Singapore International 2015 and Miss Singapore National Petite 2015/2016. Although the requirements of both pageants are very different, they were both truly a great experience.

Many people think pageantry is all about glamour but not many know that we actually have to go through really time consuming and hectic trainings, from personal grooming to social etiquette workshops to public speaking workshops and even physical training to make sure our bodies are “swimsuit” ready. Looking back, I am still pretty amazed with how I managed to cope with school and pageant training.

I also met really wonderful and inspiring young ladies in the pageants that I’ve joined whom I have become really good friends with. I am really thankful that Singapore Women’s Association believed in me and gave me the opportunity because that first pageant became my stepping stone into the industry of modelling and other pageants that I joined after.

Do you have any other hobbies?

I am someone who is really outgoing and I really enjoy meeting new people and getting to know them. However, I feel that my hobbies are slightly on the quieter side. I enjoy painting and I’ve learnt painting on canvas since I was 5 years old. Today, I already have a huge collection of paintings that I find it difficult to store them.

Other than that, I also really enjoy baking. I am someone with really sweet tooth so I love trying out new recipes and baking for my friends and family.

I wouldn’t describe myself as a sporty individual but if there is one sport that I can proudly say I can do well in; it has to be bowling. I use to bowl every single week when I was much younger and I guess that was how I picked up this hobby. Now, with the busy schedule that I have, I still love bowling during my free time and I think it is a really good and easy sport to pick up.

What is the funniest thing that has happened to you?

I wouldn’t say its funny, more like me being really blur. So back then when I was still a year 1 student in Uni, I was really unfamiliar with my school environment. There was once I entered the wrong class and I didn’t even know. I set up my laptop and actually sat through the entire lecture without realizing the content was completely foreign. It was only when the lecturer told us to get into groups to discuss the questions that I realized I was in the wrong class. It was so embarrassing!

If you could be a cartoon character, what will you be?

I think I’d be Bubbles from Powerpuff Girls. She looks really cute on the outside but she’s really tough on the inside. The reason why I love that cartoon so much is because it was a great part of my childhood. I use to watch it and role play with my cousins when we were much younger. But other than that, most importantly, the message behind this cartoon series is to educate young girls to let them know that we, females, can be as powerful as men, and we can also save the world.

How will you describe an ideal date?

An ideal date to me would of course be one spent with the person I love and I like to keep it simple; one where we would whip up a great meal together and spend the rest of the evening chilling away, talking about anything under the stars and watching the sunrise together.

It is a pleasure to feature you, Hilda. One question before we end, how do you define “sexy”?

It is being confident. It is believing in yourself. It is being beautiful both inside and out. And that to me is the definition of sexy.
