    Performing Artist Shanice Stanislaus

    Hi, I’m Shanice!

I’m a Singaporean based multi-disciplinary performing artist with a focus on dance, theatre and clown. I started in the live theatre industry in Singapore but have since gone on to bring my work internationally and to the genre of film. When I am not performing. I like to take on other creative roles such as directing, producing and arts education. I also have my own creative arts company, Creatives Inspirit where I bring arts to communities that experience illness, disabilities and poverty.

Was being a performer something you’ve always wanted to be since you were a child?

Yes! I didn’t realize it then but now when I look back, as a young child, I used to dance along to songs, play make believe with my toys and my friends from the playground. I was always finding a reason to act and dance. I remember family gatherings  where my aunties would always ask my cousins and I what we wanted to be when we grew up. They all would answer ‘I want to be a doctor’ and I would lie and say the same thing because I felt the pressure to say the right thing but in my head I was always saying to myself, ‘I’m going to be an actress!’.

I also vividly remember begging my mother to let me go to dance class or join the drama club. She never let me go to a dance class until I became a teenager and I rebelled against her but I managed to join the drama club in my school when I was 12 and that changed my life! Best decision of my life!

What has been a memorable acting or modeling or performance you have had before that is unforgettable?

In 2016, I had the opportunity to work for a dance creation center called La Caldera in Barcelona. I remember taking a class with a renowned choreographer and director, Alberto Velasco. I was just an intern then for the company, trying to learn as much as I can by taking classes. He had seen me in the class and asked my boss if I could join his show for a large international festival, El Festival Del Grec.

I was extremely honored to be randomly talent spotted and to do the show. I was the only Singaporean in an amazing company of mainly Spanish based dancers and actors. It was a big learning curve for me because it was a fully Spanish show so I had to step up my Spanish language game for the show. Alberto Velasco was such a phenomenal director and the show itself was innovative.

The show was a dance theatre show built on the idea of a competition so as the performers we all were competing every night of the show. This experience was memorable because I won two nights out of three of the festival run and I felt quite on top of the world doing that show!

Which is the best compliment you have received?

A renowned choreographer from LA, Brinn Nicole, she’s one of my teachers, she once looked at me over ZOOM and said to me (along the lines of, not verbatim)

when I look at you and your energy I see this playfulness and when people are around your energy I see that your energy gives people the permission to embrace their playfulness and their inner child.

What inspired you to start your company Creatives Inspirit and can you share more about what you do?

The inspiration behind Creatives Inspirit came from my final year capstone project in my university, ‘The Drunken Butterfly’.  ‘The Drunken Butterfly’ was a clown and dance theatre performance that was created to enable audiences to better understand the struggles of illness and caregiving. Creating that work was inspired by many stories of students on my campus who were dealing with similar experiences. The performance was a hit and it was restaged a second time in Singapore. That experience made me and a few of my collaborators realize we wanted to use art to help communities in need and so we came together and Creatives Inspirit was birthed.

Over the past five years, Creatives Inspirit has created many impactful projects, such as the ‘AnyBody Can Dance’, ‘Play through Movement’, the ‘Why Should I Care’ programme series and many more. These are inclusive programmes for diverse communities including those who experience illness, caregiving or disabilities. In these programs, we use various artistic mediums like dance, theatre, visual arts and clown as tools of respite and empowerment to individuals from all walks of life.

Before I started Creatives Inspirit, I ran a dance program in Cambodia for many years where I brought dance and Zumba to poverty ridden communities and taught a special program to help youths use dance as a way of empowerment for artistic expression and learn the tools they need to potentially build their own artistic career. I’ve always been interested in bringing and sharing the arts with people who have no access to them and I’m glad I get to continue to do that through Creatives Inspirit.

Which are your favorite quotes or mottos you like to use for inspiration?

Everything is always working out for you, best case scenario.

It helps me through the bad days for sure.

If you could learn anything in this world, what will it be?

I would love to learn where my ancestors come from. I literally can’t trace back my lineage very far because of various things in my family like world war two and adoptions. I would really love to know if there were artists like me in my lineage or personalities like mine. I come from a mixed race family and I have always been curious about the people in my ancestral history.

Do you have any exciting projects lined up for 2022?

I am currently in Canada right now getting ready to perform my first solo comedy show. I’m one of the featured acts in an international artists festival in Calgary and being the only Singaporean act in this lineup has been very exciting! This project definitely has been a milestone in my performing career!

Thank you for taking the time to answer our questions Shanice. One question before we end, how do you define “sexy”?

Sexy is you not being afraid to clown around and be your true self even if that means your favourite song plays in the mall and you aren’t too shy and dance it out!

  • Singapore Content Creator Alethea Chung

    Singapore Content Creator Alethea Chung

Hello! My name is Alethea, and I’m from Singapore. I’m just an ordinary girl who often experiments in different skills such as dancing, hosting, and modeling. I used to be active on TikTok – which is how my whole social media journey began.

How is your fashion style like and where do you draw inspiration from?

Never too basic, but never too much, though I’m not afraid to stand out in the crowd. My style has evolved with time, and I now prefer to wear more neutral colors. I have a petite frame, so I like to wear clothes that accentuate my proportions. Simplicity is fine, but with a touch of personality, especially class.

@tessalht and @hannnahhtaylor are two Instagram profiles that best describe my style preferences (right now)! I also draw inspiration from YouTube channels ‘Clothesnbits’ and ‘안녕하새은 Saeeun’.

Fun fact, almost all my fashion pieces are from Korean stores that ship to Singapore and that’s where a huge bulk of my money goes to cause shipping fees aren’t cheap!

Do you have any favorite food or cuisine?

Acai is my go-to comfort food, it is an instant uplifter! I also love poké bowls and sushi is always good anytime. Salmon has a special place in my heart! By now, you can probably guess that my favorite cuisine is Japanese.

Is there a beauty or exercise regime you follow regularly?

I don’t really do much for skincare – just cleanser, toner, and moisturizer. However, I try to put on sunscreen every morning before I leave the house and go for facial treatments occasionally. Sometimes, I rub an ice cube all over my face for about 20 seconds, and I usually try my best to ensure that my makeup brushes and sponges are washed before using them.

For fitness, I try my best to keep up with any of April Han’s workout routines on YouTube at least twice a week, though it’s not going very well. I do wear waist trainers or compression tights sometimes though!

If you could change one thing about the world, what will it be?

I hope for everybody to have more time to do what we truly want to do! Or world peace. No wars!

Have you been in an embarrassing situation before that is funny now when looking back?

Hmm… I used to work as a receptionist and back then we had to obtain customers’ phone numbers to register them. I asked a guy for his number, but he got shy, hesitated to give me his number and was eyeballing my colleague. Later, I just repeated my question asking for his phone number with my fingers placed on my laptop’s keyboard to clarify what I needed his number for. We had a good laugh after he left!

Would you rather be able to teleport or control objects?

Teleport! I can’t think of any reason I would need to control an object for, but I would love to be able to wake up and reach my destination within minutes and then reach home instantly after work. Imagine the amount of time I could save and the amount of extra sleep I can get.

What do you not get about the opposite sex?

I don’t understand why some guys try hard to hold their tears back to put up a brave front, for example when watching a sad movie. Nothing wrong or unsexy about crying!

Thank you for taking the time to answer our questions, Alethea. One question before we end, how do you define “sexy”?

To me, sexiness is exuded based on the way one thinks. You are sexy when your mind is sexy and heart is pretty.

  • Model, Actress & Burlesque Performer, Perline DuBarry

Model, Actress & Burlesque Performer, Perline DuBarry

I’m really please to share a bit about myself with your readers. I have been born and raised in Paris, France!

How did you get into modeling and what do you enjoy about it?

Modeling was first because I needed to explore myself and my own femininity at a time where I wasn’t confident. It became a passion and also a way to express myself because it’s really about acting in front of the camera and I like it.

Was Burlesque easy to pick up with your ballet dancing experience?

Actually it wasn’t! I had quit dancing for a while (10 years ago) when I met the Burlesque world in Sydney. At that time I was taking step by step to come back to enjoy dancing after 10 years of doing something else and Burlesque dancing has been a revelation for me!

However my body condition was terribly bad so it’s was technically hard and it’s also about sharing a story and to be able to be proud of your body on stage which is very scary.

What can someone who has never attended a Burlesque or cabaret show expect from their first experience?

Honestly, I will say, “be prepared for everything, because anything can happen!”

This is the beauty of burlesque!

Which 3 fun things do you enjoy doing most in Paris?

Well I don’t think I’m a reference because I’m pretty traditional and I enjoy traditional institutions in Paris, so my top 3 will be to:

    • Grab a ticket to watch a ballet to the Opera de Paris,
    • Another one to “la Comédie Francaise”
    • Go up onto the last floor of “Les Galeries Lafayette “ to have a cup of tea and admire the roofs of Paris!

If you could change or improve one thing about the world, what will it be?

Gosh… There are so many things that we can improve in our world but if I have to choose, I will choose to improve the conditions of women all over the world.

Because I feel closely (obviously I’m a woman) about this and this is unacceptable that in our time, men and women don’t have the same statutes and the same chances in life because of our sexes.

Would you rather invent a new gadget or discover a new species?

I want to definitely discover a new species!! Some species die because of climate change but I’m sure some new ones are born as well! And it will give a bit of hope and happiness to people I think.

    Does chivalry still exist today?

It never went away, it just took a different form. And in my opinion, it’s a good thing because we have change the codes between men and women (yes again) and chivalry was so redactor for woman.

Thank you for taking the time to answer our questions Perline. One question before we end, how do you define “sexy”?

There is nothing more sexy than a man or a woman who is confident and proud of themselves and their body.

    Be sexy…

  • Latin Ballroom Dancer & Model Amy Sharp

Latin Ballroom Dancer & Model Amy Sharp

Hi there!  Of course, thank you for having me be a part of your magazine!  I’m originally from Indiana; I relocated to Sarasota, Florida about 10 years ago.  I currently work in Human Resources during the day, and at night, am a competitive Latin ballroom dancer and internationally published model.

I’ve been published in several online and print magazines, and specialize in fashion editorials, glamour, dance/yoga, and boudoir.  I also teach Zumba and yoga.  Outside of work I enjoy playing the piano, traveling, and going on adventures like shark diving or skydiving!

What is a typical day like for yourself?

I like to start my days early because I have the most energy in the mornings.  I usually get up around 5am and start my day with meditation, affirmations, reading and journaling.  I typically have a very full schedule, so this quiet time in the morning is very important for me to get my mind right for the day.

After my “self-development” time, I like to get a workout in before work, so I usually go to Pure Barre or do some yoga or jogging.  I then have a full day at my 9-5.  After work, I will typically run straight to a shoot or to dance practice at my studio!  I try to schedule at least one or two days a week that are just for me in the evening, but overall I love to stay busy, especially when I’m focused only on opportunities that I love and am passionate about!

Did being a dancer make it easier for you to go into modeling?

Absolutely!  I’ve also had several photographers tell me they’ve had better shoots with dancers than professional models!  Dancers tend to be very aware of their bodies and which angles look best on them, which is pertinent at a shoot.

Personally, dance has helped increase my confidence tremendously, which was one of the biggest factors in getting back in front of the camera after taking several years off.

How do you juggle everything you do and find time for yourself?

The most important thing for me is to stay in tune with my emotions and accept only the opportunities I feel completely aligned with and excited by.  If I can feel myself getting drained, I won’t schedule as many shoots for a couple weeks in order to rest and restore my passion in what I’m doing.

I am very fortunate to be able to live a life full of what I love, but too much of anything is never a good thing and can actually cause anxiety if you don’t purposely schedule in your “me time”.  Good nutrition, daily exercise, taking vitamins and supplements, daily self-development and getting proper sleep are the keys to keeping my mindset right.

What will you like to learn or take up if you had the chance?

I’ve always been fascinated by contortion and getting your body to move in ways that are “unnatural” for the average person.  I study and practice in my free time but would love to be able to dive more in depth with it at some point!  That along with fire-hooping!  I hoop in my free time but have never worked up the courage to take it to the next level with a fire hoop!  Maybe in 2021 😉

If you could have a superpower, what will it be and why?

Omnilingualism – The ability to learn and speak any language instantly.  I am absolutely fascinated by other cultures and love to travel so I think it would be awesome to be able to communicate with anyone across the globe.  I’ve studied Spanish since middle school and my goal is to be bilingual at some point.

Even with years and years of experience, I find myself constantly pausing while speaking to figure out how to properly conjugate verbs in the correct tense.  It would be awesome to be able to do this in any language without a second thought!

    Which flavor best describes you?

HAHAHA I love that question.  I think I’m a jalapeño because I like to keep things spicy and interesting.  And just like a jalapeño, sometimes I’m spicier on certain days, you just never know what you’re gonna get hahaha.

Do you have any quotes or mottos you like to use regularly?

Yes I have a ton of favorite quotes and affirmations that I post on sticky notes all over my house and car because I truly believe your mindset is the most important thing to take care of!  Some of my favorites are:

    “What you appreciate, appreciates.”

“You are as happy as you decide you want to be!”

“What you focus on, you create more of.”

“If the only prayer you ever said was ‘thank you’, it would be more than enough.”

I love these ones in particular because they are little reminders that you are in control of your thoughts, beliefs and emotions, and the biggest key to pulling yourself out of a negative place is by finding gratitude for everything you do have.

Thank you for taking the time to answer our questions Amy. One question before we end, how do you define “sexy”?

I define sexy as really knowing and learning to love who you truly are.  Oftentimes this goes against what is trending mainstream, but I think it’s so sexy when someone can embrace their love for anime or checkers or whatever random hobbies they have that sets their soul on fire.  It’s what makes a person them!

I also think having goals and ambition is sexy. So many people are content working a 9-5 they’re not passionate about and numbing themselves with food, alcohol or TV every evening until bedtime.  They then repeat that for 40 years.

I don’t know about you, but I want more than that and I think it’s really sexy when other people are driven to really live life to the fullest whether it’s with entrepreneurship, a career they’re passionate about, a hobby, travel, starting a family, etc.  Living their truth.

Travel Enthusiast Meika From Hong Kong

I am born and raised in Hong Kong. I am a part time accountant as well as a freelance dance tutor, especially for children. I am a travel enthusiast so I started an Instagram travel account last year and have been a travel blogger for these two years.

What hobbies and interests do you have?

I love traveling, dancing, hiking and singing. I am a budget traveler and I really enjoy hiking, and taking dance classes in different countries. I always prefer nature and mountains! I love learning new things so I have started learning the ukulele last month during the third wave of COVID 19 in Hong Kong.

How is a typical day like for yourself?

Before the coronavirus, I used to have a busy schedule.  I work as an accountant in the morning and as a dance tutor in the afternoon and evening. Besides, I go for dance classes regularly. I use my freelancing to fund my travelling. My dream is to be a traveling freelancer!

On a scale of 1-10, how much of a foodie are you?

    1. I am not a foodie. I sometimes eat one meal per day when traveling alone in order to save money. XD

What are 3 fun things you like to do in the city you live in?

    1. Dancing for sure!

    2. Hiking. There are many amazing hiking trails in Hong Kong.

    3. Exploring hidden gems in Hong Kong.

Do you have any quotes or mottos you like to use regularly?

As a Christian, I love to use bible verses. Below are my favorite quotes:

    1. So be as wise as snakes and as innocent as doves.  (Matthew 10:16)

    2. Life is simple when you live simply

    3. For the Lord sees not as man sees: man looks on the outward appearance, but the Lord looks on the heart (1 Samuel 16:7)

    4.  Humility is not thinking less of yourself; it is thinking of yourself less. Humility is thinking more of others. -Rick Warren

    5. Great minds discuss ideas; average minds discuss events; small minds discuss people. – Eleanor Roosevelt

    Which flavor best describes you?

I love chocolate! I am lively, creative, dramatic, and enthusiastic. I will easily become bored with the usual routine.

What is a funny pickup line or attempt someone has tried on you?

    I don’t remember. XD

Thank you for taking the time to answer our questions Meika. One question before we end, how do you define “sexy”?

It’s all about inner beauty. Everyone is unique. Be confident in who you are and you will be attractive and sexy. It’s a feeling and feeling comfortable with yourself.

  • Dancer & Model Karilyn Villarini

    Dancer & Model Karilyn Villarini

SimplySxy catches up with dancer and model Karilyn Villarini as she talks about fashion, her beauty regime and what turns her off on a date!

    What inspires your fashion style?

What inspires my fashion style for the most part is what I feel comfortable and beautiful in.  A lot of life I was insecure about how my body looked in certain clothing and let it close my mind to express myself through clothing.  Now, I am more open minded and like to try new looks.  What usually drives my choice of wardrobe depends on what look I am trying to go for either for a photoshoot or music video.

How do you keep up to date with all the latest fashion styles and trends?

I do enjoy keeping up with fashion styles and trends that are tasteful to me but I never force anything that isn’t me.  I do get inspired by many fellow dancers, models, and friends!

What is the best compliment you have received?

The best compliment I have received would be that my aura and vibe lights up the room before my looks.  I received this compliment on set and it warmed my heart! I try to always give out what I want around me.

Do you have a strict beauty or exercise regime that you follow?

Hmm… as far as beauty regime, the only strict thing about it would be my skincare and haircare.  I religiously use my origins facial products.  The hair product line I use is CURLS. I try to keep up with deep conditioning and protective styles to help my natural hair look healthier.

My exercise regime isn’t as strict as it previously was but I generally work out about 3 times a week not including dance training.  Again, this may fluctuate due to work or gigs but for the most part I try to maintain my figure by staying active!

If you could have a superpower, what will it be?

If I had a superpower it would be to teleport. I would love to be able to travel from CT to NYC/LA whenever I want 😉 !!!

Do you believe in any superstition?

I always believed that my ears rang whenever someone else was talking about me.

What turns you off on a date?

What would turn me off on a date would be, 1) being rude to the waitress, 2) being on your phone the entire time, and 3) letting me pay my tab if I was invited and taken out (especially if it’s the first time!).

Thank you for taking the time to answer our questions Karilyn. One question before we end, how do you define “sexy”?

The definition of “sexy” is however anybody wants to define it as it pertains to them. Personally my definition of “sexy” for ME is feeling empowered, confident, and beautiful especially while expressing it through my art/craft.

    Multi-Talented English Performer Laura Lake

Hi, thank you so much for having me! I am a singer, dancer, actor, model and training stuntwoman from London England.

    Photo: Alan Walker

    What inspires your fashion style?

Oh good question, in normal life I love classic cuts and tailored clothing. I love going to LFW and seeing the latest trends and the amazing creativity from the designers, but I would say I am most inspired by old Hollywood glam. However on set/performing I can be in anything from a bejeweled leotard to combat army gear which is also a lot of fun.

    Photo: Anna Fowler

How do you keep up to date with all the latest fashion styles and trends?

I love nothing more than sitting with a copy of Vogue or Elle with a cup of tea to keep up to date. I also enjoy scrolling through Instagram as there always seems to be an abundance of different styles and trend fusions that look amazing.

What is the best compliment you have received?

I sometimes get told that I “light up the room”. Which is really cool as I love to make others feel good and spread joy.

    Photo: Garry Lake

Do you have a strict beauty or exercise regime that you follow?

I do for both. For my skin I always have two litres of water a day, twice a week I exfoliate with elemis and use facemasks. Each day I wash my face with water, then Clinique cleanser, toner, I then put on a serum, moisturizer and sunblock. At the end of the day I cleanse and tone my skin followed by a Lancôme night balm.

For my hair I put John Frieda serum on the ends every day, I try not to put heat on it if I can and every second wash I only use Bumble invisible oil conditioner (naturally my hair curly/frizzy), I use Olapex no.3 hair mask twice a week – it’s a game changer! It has saved my hair from all the backcombing etc from being on set. I also only brush my hair when it has conditioner in or if I am straightening/styling it.

Exercise, I set myself a new program every six weeks – training for the stunt register is pretty challenging so I have to make sure I am physically fit. I train six times a week and have a cheat/rest day along with yoga, dancing, kickboxing, gymnastics, trampolining, swimming and horse riding.

    Photo: Sasha Handley

    Photo: Garry Lake

If you could have a superpower, what will it be?

Oh love this question! Umm I would love to be able to teleport; it would save so much time! Haha.

Do you believe in any superstition?

I do, I am quite superstitious. I read tarot cards, auras and palms. I have soooo many crystals and love to meditate. I have lots of little superstitious habits, one that often receives a funny look is if someone sneezes, I say bless you, they say thank you and I clap twice…. It’s a weird habit that started when I was five and it has stuck. It is said that it saves a fairies’ life when you clap haha.

What turns you off on a date?

Rudeness – kindness costs nothing and means everything. 😊

Thank you for taking the time to answer our questions Laura. One question before we end, how do you define “sexy”?

Thank you so much for having me! Its been fun. I think sexy is an inner confidence that you exude, it’s an energy. Anyone can be sexy, it’s a combination of their confidence, humor and how they make you feel.

  • Texas Based Published Model Sacha Bennett

Texas Based Published Model Sacha Bennett

Hi! Thank you for having me. My name is Sacha Bennett I am about to finish my junior year in college at the University of Houston-Clear Lake pursuing a B.S. in Legal Studies. I was born in the United Kingdom but have lived in Texas for the past 11 years.

What hobbies or interests do you have?

I love dancing! I grew up taking ballet but recently started learning country dances which I love. I also enjoy cooking and finding new recipes, and I actually really like cleaning and modeling for fun!

Where do you usually love to shop from?

Since I am so petite it can be very hard to find clothes that fit me and still make me look mature. I have found that Garage is the best store for me, but I enjoy hunting for a good item at Goodwill or Platos Closet.

How will you describe a typical day like for yourself?

I would describe a typical day as busy. I am a morning person so I wake up around 7 with my dog. I workout, I study, I decide what I will make for dinner, and if it is sunny outside I tan.

Do you follow a beauty regime strictly?

No, I do not follow a strict beauty regime. I actually prefer not to wear makeup. The most important thing to me is washing my face twice a day and staying moisturized.

Is there something you’ve always wanted to do but have yet to find the time for it?

I definitely want to travel in the future, but being a full time student makes it very hard to find the time for it. I would love to go to Hawaii!

Would you rather have the ability to talk to animals or time travel?

I would much rather be able to talk to animals! I love all animals and spend a lot of time around goats, horses, ducks, chickens and donkeys. I also have the most precious Husky, and I would love to be able to talk to them.

What do you not get about guys?

One thing I do not understand about guys is why they won’t ask for directions. It sounds so silly, but there have been so many times that I have witnessed a guy not wanting to ask for help.

Thank you for taking the time to answer our questions Sacha. One question before we end, how do you define “sexy”?

I think sexy is being confident about every aspect of yourself, your mind, soul, and body. It is knowing what you want and working towards it.

  • What Is It Like To Be A Dancer & Model?

What Is It Like To Be A Dancer & Model?

I have loved the arts ever since I was a little girl. I would always have drawing sessions with my older sibling, and sometimes my mom would take us to ceramics studios. In addition to visual art, music has also played a huge part in my life. I’ve been playing piano since the age of seven – I grew up learning to read music like it was my ABC’s. Music has been a constant, unwavering force in my life. Music has always been there as a source of comfort, motivation, encouragement, and of course, enjoyment. Music has never let me down.

Loving music naturally led me to dance at the same time that visual art led me to pursue modeling and graphic design. For this reason, I strongly believe that all the arts are interconnected in some way. Art is about so much more than just capturing the eye; it can tell a story, convey an emotion, raise awareness, and engender change. Art has played such a pivotal role in advancing social movements, as art has the power to educate the masses and galvanize people to rally for a cause. Art is not only enjoyable to make and consume, but plays a huge role in shaping minds, culture, and society.

    Why I Love Dancing

Because I have always loved music, I also loved to watch people dance. When I was young, I would constantly watch music and dance videos in my free time, but I never believed that I was capable of dancing. I would always hold myself back from dancing for fear of being judged, even when my body could barely resist the urge to move. Getting over this fear was a slow, arduous process that took years to move past.

I first started dancing at parties as a way to connect with other people and share energy. Embracing the social aspect of dancing helped me break out of my shell and begin pursuing dance more seriously. I love dance because it helps me feel more connected with others and more confident. Sometimes, if I’m really feeling the music, dancing makes me feel like I’m in my own world, where I’m the one in charge.

    Dance Genres I’m Into

I like to dance jazz funk. I’ve trained through taking classes both at UCLA and at dance studios in LA and joining dance teams. I dance with a UCLA organization called Bruin Burlesque, which specializes in burlesque, a type of sensual, provocative dance that is mainly done in heels. I love to dance jazz funk because it makes me feel powerful and keeps me in touch with my sexuality.

I also dance with Taste the Rainbow, an all LGBTQ+ exhibition dance team. Taste the Rainbow’s pieces cover a variety of styles, including jazz funk, hip hop, vogueing, and waacking. Joining Taste the Rainbow has helped me explore more styles, become even more confident in my sexuality, and grow both as a dancer and as a person.

Dancing Tips For Those Who Are Shy

This was me not too long ago! I truly believe that everyone can be a dancer, just as everyone can be a model. Scientifically, dancing provided an evolutionary advantage, since it allowed humans to bond and communicate. Humans are built to process music and move to the beat. I encourage everyone to jump out of their comfort zone, let loose, and dance.

I get stuck in my own head all the time, worrying about what my dancing looks like and how others are perceiving it. When that happens, I just try to remind myself that it’s not that deep, and that it’s natural to make mistakes. If you’re just starting out, next time you have some alone time, put on a song you love and just groove it out. No mirrors, nothing. Feeling the music flow through your body is possibly one of the most liberating feelings ever.

My Role As A Dancer At Taste the Rainbow

Taste the Rainbow is an all LGBTQ+ dance team that aims to empower queer dancers by providing them with a safe, inclusive, and supportive space. The majority of couples’ pieces in mainstream dance showcases are straight couples. It is something that I have always taken issue with, as it erases the existence of queer couples. It lacks inclusivity, and quite frankly, it’s boring.

Taste the Rainbow subverts that by celebrating the intersection of performance and resistance and carving out space for ourselves in a society that often puts us down. We perform at school events, showcases, and sometimes nightclubs. My favorite performance by far was at Rage, a gay club in West Hollywood. Getting to dance up on stage in front of a huge crowd in a queer space was beyond exhilarating. Joining Taste the Rainbow has definitely been one of the highlights of my college experience; it’s introduced me to such a supportive community and helped me grow so much.

Does Being A Dancer Make Modeling Easier?

Yes, absolutely! I have grown so much through dancing. I have become so much more comfortable and confident taking up space. The camera easily picks up on even the smallest bit of fear or insecurity, which definitely translates into the photos. Dancing has made me more aware of my body, which has definitely helped with my posing. That’s why so many professional dancers eventually become models during their career; they have amazing body control and awareness, plus confidence.

    Advice For Aspiring Dancers

Prepare to make mistakes. Try not to let ego get in the way — your dancing won’t look amazing right off the bat, and that’s just fine. Nobody starts out good (life just doesn’t work like that).

Also, prepare to be pushed to your physical limit. Dancing is an intense workout; it requires both mental and physical fortitude. And try not to take it too seriously — it should always be fun.

  • Performer & Contortionist Emiria Morihata

    Performer & Contortionist Emiria Morihata

I was born in South Africa, my father is mixed Italian and Dutch, and my mother is Japanese. I live in Magdeburg Germany with my fiancé. I am working at Variete Theaters, at dinner shows, Burlesque shows, the Sexy Circus, and at Gig Shows.

I studied rhythm gymnastics and modern ballet. And also learnt to aerial hoop and circus act. When I was in America, I learned pole dancing. It was a great experience. But I broke my shoulder and lost my flexibility. Then I decided to be a contortionist again!! For me it is like a fish in the water.

I am still not finished being an artist. I am looking forward to continue creating my character to be very unique and special. So, step by step I found exactly one unique contortion style. This is called the “Massage Bench Contortionist”. I was in the German TV show “Das super Talent 2018” and my next performance is “Et Cetera Variete” in Bochum.

What hobbies and interests do you have?

    Diving, home parties, summer sports…everything.

How did your interest in being a contortionist come about?

I followed my sister in joining rhythm gymnastics and modern ballet. Then I was very excited and kept doing it for 17 years. My sister did it for two years then she quit. But now she is a super popular cosplayer.

What is a typical day like for you?

Breakfast, contortion training for three hours, lunch (protein shake), gym for 1.5 hours. Spending time with my fiancé or friends. In the evening, I must drink one glass of white wine.

Which is a memorable show or performance have you had before?

OMG, this is my big surprise and never ever had it before.

My fiancé proposed to me on stage….In my act (please follow for the picture and videos) I just want to say he is my dream man and I am the luckiest woman in the world.

If you could learn anything in this world, what will it be?

    Breathing under water.

Have you been in an embarrassing situation that is funny now when you look back?

I didn’t forget my show costume, but I forgot my general outfit. Then I asked all my colleagues to have some of their outfits.

What is a funny or lame attempt a guy has tried to know you before?

Once I was practicing in the gym, I did my hip exercise, one guy tried to tell me that my training was wrong and I was hurting my back. He offered to show me a better way. But I am a professional artist and I know how to train right for 17 years, so I said to him, “No thank you, my back is healthy and I know what I am doing.” After that, I saw him trying the same on another woman. I was laughing because the guy doesn’t come to the gym to practice fitness.

Thank you for taking the time to answer our questions Emiria. One question before we end, how do you define “sexy”?

My opinion in defining sexy is having a passion for life. When I have a passion on the stage, I feel like “I am super sexy in the world”. This makes me motivated and confident. I will say, please find your passion – this is very sexy!!
