    Chinese Beauty Lina Lau

Hi Lina, thank you for taking the time to answer our questions on SimplySxy. Can you share with our readers a little about yourself and where you’re from?

Thank you for having me! My heritage is from the beautiful city Kunming in Yunnan, China. I was raised in Hong Kong and now, I live in Sydney. Kunming is a beautiful city tucked between mountains and crystal clear lakes. It’s a cultural paradise where everything is so close to nature, which means it supplies most of the organic, fresh fruits and vegetables to China. When you go to Kunming, it’s easy to forget you’re in China… it takes your breath away, there really is nothing like it!

How did you get into modeling and was it something you’ve always wanted to do?

I have always had an appreciation for beauty. Poetry and art was really what started it… so modelling was a natural progression for me. It’s this desire to create something emotive and beautiful.

Which genre do you prefer to model?

Anything that allows me to take on an interesting character.

What other hobbies do you have?

I’m more interested in holding a conversation about Tesla, artificial intelligence and quantum physics than talking about fashion and designer clothing. I am a huge nerd at heart and I think my childlike sense of curiosity means I’m always trying to learn new things.

    3

How much of a foodie are you and what are your favourites?

I’m a total food snob. I love quality ingredients that are grown in organic soil. I’m very interested in where my food comes from – how the food left the farm and got onto my plate. I try a new restaurant every week so it’s only natural that I’m now working on a food blog… so watch this space…

If you could learn anything in this world, what will it be and why?

I would love to learn everything there is to know about food cultivation and 3D printing so I can merge my two loves to create a 3D printer that can print any dish in the world.

    4

Which is the funniest attempt a guy has tried to know you and did it work?

Honestly, I have a very hilarious dating history. I could probably write a book about it all… but I’m a lady, so I’ll save that for another time!

Will you be in any events or projects where we can hope to see you in the coming year?

Magazine covers, YouTube videos, lookbooks and plenty more! You can stay up to date with me on my website www.lina-lau.net and on my Instagram @linaxlau.

It’s a pleasure to feature you on SimplySxy and before we end, how do you define “sexy”?

Sexy is when you don’t care what other people think and you are unapologetically, you.

  • Voluptuous Playboy Bunny Sunshine Shen

    Voluptuous Playboy Bunny Sunshine Shen

    Who is Sunshine Shen?

I was originally born in a small industrial town located in North China called Haerbin. Then I was lucky enough to relocate to America with my mom at the age of 8; at that time we were living in Florida.

    image3

What made you go into modeling?

I always wanted to be published on Playboy! Plus I guess I was a small town girl day dreaming about the good life and the decision to turn my dreams into reality.

    4

How is the experience like being a Playboy bunny and model?

It’s everything I imagined it would be! It’s glamorous, thrilling and opened up a lot of doors for me!

Which is the funniest attempt a guy has tried to pick you up?

“Can I buy you a drink…but…I’m under aged.” *attempts to hand me a twenty dollar bill*

Are you more comfortable in lingerie or bikini?

    Lingerie!

    image1

Where can we catch you partying most of the time?

I’m actually not the biggest partier…I worked hospitality in the hottest clubs on the Vegas strip, which I think took away the fun of nightlife. I prefer to stick to my boring Sunday brunches with my bunnies lol.

What’s the best compliment you have received?

“You remind me of the singer that licks donuts!”

Which is your favorite body part?

    Boobs!

    image2

It’s a pleasure to feature youSunshine. One question before we end, how doyou define “sexy”?

Sexy is confidence, inner beauty and a high sense of self worth but not arrogance!

  • Mainland China, Family and Marriage

    Mainland China, Family and Marriage

Marriage is an established institution pervasive in every culture, not even barring Chinese one. Tracking down its history, I notice that Confucianism plays a crucial role in influencing marriage choices, which leads to a focus of the social unit “family”. One may also have heard the proverb jia-he-wan-shi-xing (家和万事兴). It reads: a harmonious family results in success in everything. This core value that derives from Confucianism is dominant in Chinese culture including marriage. Alluding to the word “marriage”, I would like to explicate singly into heterosexual and homosexual cases, along with a brief background of heteronormative marriage in Chinese culture at the beginning.

Historically, marriage is based on heteronormativity; that is, the basic institution of man and woman. The representation of Confucianism, in the philosophy Yin-Yang (阴阳), validates this conceptualization. Yin (阴)represents woman/femininity; Yang (阳)man/masculinity. In today’s Chinese society, when a man or a woman comes of age, marriage symbolizes success in one’s life. The proverb cheng-jia-li-ye (成家立业), which means “ marry and have a secure career”, substantiates this value. What is interesting, there are some crucial elements to actually manipulate such a marriage. It can also be said, children themselves have no one hundred percent freedom; some cultural values often intervene.

The Chinese family prioritizes harmony. The word “harmony” in this context designates “filial piety”. It is always the parents who are most influential in the partner-choosing process. Li (2013:71) noted, children’s marriage is part of the parents’ life as well. I further observed parents always prioritize well-to-do prospective spouses. It does not really come as a surprise. Li affirmed, first comes money and then love (72). This phenomenon is considered a normal case to every single socio-economic landscape. Capitalism has been transforming our universal social values to focus on wealth. With regards to marriage, the spouse-to-be would be considered as a materialistic object. Love then remains marginalized as such.

As for homosexual cases in marriage, there is not much difference between the social factors of “money” and “parental force”. The difference is the fact that in Chinese society, regardless of sexuality, children are expected to marry and have heteronormative marriages. In this case, parental force is significantly authoritative. As known, a substantial number of gay couples seek co-operative marriages and many decide to leave their hometown and their family to live on their own home with their same-sex partner(s). It is, nevertheless, not all pessimistic. Some parents, albeit still minority of the Chinese families, celebrate sexual diversity of gay children as seen in the documentary film “Mama Rainbow” (dir. Fan Popo, 2012).

All in all, mechanism of marriage and family in mainland China is too deep into the Sino-philosophical principle “Confucianism”, for preference philosophy Yin-Yang. This core value is driven by capitalism, leading the culture into the materialistic juncture, while both “Confucianism” and “capitalism” are promoted by the government, the Chinese Communist Party. As Jackoben (2002) noted, “family values may be emphasized by states as a response to the perceived determining of family structure by capitalism”.

I may end this issue here and next issue will be of more clarification of the ways in which the CCP have been manipulating the said factors. Happy reading!!! 🙂

  • When Lesbians Marry Gay Men – ShanghaiPRIDE Film Festival

When Lesbians Marry Gay Men – ShanghaiPRIDE Film Festival

On its third day of event, ShanghaiPRIDE Film Festival (ShPFF) brought to the audience a hefty discussion around marriage equality, with the support of Consulate General of Switzerland in Shanghai. The ‘Documenting Marriage’ panelists were filmmaker Yuan Yuan, Swiss Consul General Sacha Steiner and Scott Chang, who made headlines last year after marrying his British boyfriend in Beijing, China.

Screening were Chinese documentary Our Marriages: When Lesbians Marry Gay Men and Swiss docu-drama The Circle. The Taste of Memory – Their Tomato was also screened as part of ShPFF’s support for local filmmaking talents.

Our Marriages: When Lesbians Marry Gay Men follows two lesbian couples in their twenties, who founded an online forum for contract marriages. An unusual and often hilarious observation piece, the films exposes the audience the complicated reality of contract marriage in China. The director, Yuan Yuan, opened up the discussion by pointing out marriage as a cultural phenomenon is more of a performance than an institution of actual meanings.

    mmexport1434643496402

Scott Chang shared his personal experiences of marriage, offering that he liked the tradition and valued it as an expression of love. The figure of 60million gay men in China being married to heterosexual women startled him, he said.

Sacha Steiner, who opened the evening with a powerful proclamation of support for LGBTQ globally, and a reminder of the places were equality is far from achieved, spoke about his decision to bring Teddy Award winning The circle to Shanghai.

The Circle is the story of the first legally married same-sex couple in Switzerland. Through recreated scenes from the early involvement in magazine and ball circuit ‘Der Kries’, they share how their love and lives have grown in the face of adversity.

ShanghaiPRIDE Film Festival will continue with glamor until Sunday, June 21st, featuring a series of screenings, panel discussions, and a filmmaking workshop, attempting to shed a rainbow of acceptance and love to the rainy season of the city. More information and a downloadable digital program can be found at www.shpride.com/films.

Iridescence, love, glamor – ShanghaiPRIDE Film Festival

Iridescence, love, glamor – ShanghaiPRIDE Film Festival (ShPFF) launched its opening on Sunday 14th June at one of the city’s most historic theatres, The Pearl. Organized entirely by volunteers, ShanghaiPRIDE is able to bring a part of its cultural traditions to a whole new level in its 7th year with the launch of ShPFF. With an immensely diverse audience crowd from within and outside of China and the attendance of industry professionals, the opening night was a huge success.11220913_749452805178268_4275903106542681009_n

Cheng Peipei, the renowned mainland-born Hong Kong actress, also made her way back to her hometown in support of the first public screening of her work Lilting in China. The spotlight was shared by short film A Straight Journey: Days and Nights in Their Kingdom, winner of Best Film in the ShPFF  2015 short film competition. The directors were in attendance, Beijing duo masamojo.

A Straight Journey: Days and Nights in Their Kingdom represents the strongest voice in this year’s short film competition of ShPFF and takes home two major awards: Best Film Award and Queer Vision Award. It is ShPFF’s mission as well as challenge to support and provide a platform for emerging Chinese filmmakers in queer cinema worldwide. As part of that commitment, ShPFF will send masamojo’s film to Iris Prize (UK) for a chance to win £30,000 in production funds.1907532_749452531844962_732573035012238867_n

The night also announced a complete list of award winning short movies, all of which will be screened free to the public throughout the week at different venues of the city.

During the screening of Lilting, Cheng Peipei sat at the balcony as the audience below dived into the melancholy of her character in the film. The crowd broke into waves of applause as Peipei walked up to the stage afterwards for a Q&A. When asked about the theme of the work, Cheng Peipei expressed that the Lilting had transcend the mere discussion of sexuality and self-identity, but rather touched the core of all barriers among people, which is a lack of communication and the refusal to accept love. The response largely resonated with ShPRIDE’s theme for the year: Love is Our Future.

The Opening Party kicked off shortly after the Q&A, featuring a staple of Shanghai party scene, Mau Mau. Electro house beats filled the vintage theatre to celebrate the opening of a whole week of queer cinematic delights.

    The Circle (Der Kreis)
    Director: Stefan Haupt
    Country & Year: Switzerland, 2014
German with Chinese & English subtitles

Based on true stories, The Circle (Der Kreis) is a docudrama about the lifelong romantic relationship between Ernst and Röbi, who met through Switzerland’s first gay association – Der Kreis. With interviews of the now elderly gentlemen, historical footage from the 50s, and dramatized representations based on their accounts on the gay life in postwar Zürich, the film looks back from the present to the time of Der Kreis’ rise and fall. Ernst, a schoolteacher, and Röbi, a flamboyant drag queen, later became one of the first to enter registered partnership in Switzerland. Besides depicting their love story, the film further serves as a powerful testimony to the legacy of Der Kreis, which remains one of the world’s most important journals promoting the legal and social rights of gay men.
