    Tokyo Based Singer Songwriter Syrena Quills

    My name is Sarina, but I go as Syrena (pronounced the same) online! I’m Lebanese-Japanese and I live in Tokyo.

    What inspired you to be a singer songwriter?

    My whole family is made of performers, my mothers a dancer and my father a singer. I guess growing up around the industry it really opened my eyes to this burning passion for performance I had!

    Which is a memorable performance you have done before that you enjoyed every minute of it?

    My first professional musical! I was 12 and terrified during my audition, and convinced I didn’t get it but three weeks later I was told that I had gotten the lead role. The rehearsals were gruelling but on opening night… the curtains lifted, the lights hit my face and the music started. It was amazing!! I shared the role so I performed opening night, a Saturday matinee and then closing night. We got standing ovations every time!!! I look back on those days and cry sometimes…

    How many characters have you estimated to have cosplayed and do you have any favorites?

    I haven’t cosplayed all that much in all honesty. I’ve done two characters from Love Live (school idol project), I did a cosplay of a vampire named Krul Tepes from Seraph of the end. And then two versions of Hatsune Miku! My favourite is probably Hatsune Miku!

    What are 3 fun things you like to do in the city you live in?

    I love love love love love cafe culture here!! So one of my favourite things to do is just to go cafe crawling, looking for cute and hidden cafes and enjoying a nice cup of house blend coffee. Sometimes with a friend, sometimes alone. I also love aimlessly walking around, you find incredibly interesting things when you aren’t actually looking, so I do that a lot when I go on street shoots. And lastly, I’d say I enjoy karaoke with friends!

    Which movie or TV show did you watch recently and do you recommend it?

    I’ve been in a slump recently so I’ve been rewatching some anime. I recently rewatched Made In Abyss which I think is fantastic! A tad dark so be careful. And then I’m also watching the Great British Baking Show! It’s very relaxing but don’t watch it when you’re hungry!

    Is there any food or drink you can’t live without?

    I’m pretty health conscious so I’d say my favourite food are kind of boring, but I am absolutely addicted to caffeine!! Without my daily three coffees I cannot survive haha.

    What is a lame attempt a guy has tried to know you before?

    Oh god… there’s so many…. I don’t remember most of them because they aren’t quite worth remembering. In all honesty? The worst ones are when people just straight up say “hey are you waiting for someone? Are you single? Want to grab a drink?”, when I’m just walking or standing someplace.

    It happens really often and I guess I find the approach dull and unoriginal. If you had a really hilarious pick up line that was obviously a joke, or an insightful question, a nice compliment, that already makes a huge difference.

    Thank you for taking the time to answer our questions Syrena. One question before we end, how do you define “sexy”?

    I think in this day, the word “Sexy” is widely appropriated to mean “sexual.” But something can be sexy without being inherently sexual! So to me I find independence, mental and emotional maturity, intellect and a will to learn incredibly sexy. When someone shows me that they have their life together or are actively working to better themselves, that shows a lot of strength of heart and that’s very much sexy.

    I’m a full time performing/recording artiste and a singer-songwriter. I’m also teaching vocals at the moment. Apart from making music, cooking is my second favorite! Cats and otters are my favorite animals.
I’m from Melaka, Malaysia. It is a peaceful place full of good food and kind people.

    Was singing something that you always had an interest in since you were a child?

    Definitely! My parents were my biggest influence when I was little. I grew up in a family filled with music and singing.

    What do you find most challenging about being a singer?

    Undoubtedly, the challenge is to continue evolving and learning in order to keep up with the irreversible change around us. Musicians can’t remain stagnant in our craft – masterpieces are works-in-progress created by those who are willing to learn new things. Those who chose to stay the same will soon be left behind.

    Where do you get your song writing inspiration from?

    I wrote my first song when I was in secondary school, but I did not have the courage to share my compositions with the people around me. Unfortunately, the compositions went missing as time passed. It was only during university years when I finally composed a song for a crush that I thought was my true love.

    It wasn’t meant to be in the end, but it did give me courage to share my compositions, haha! Actually, my source of inspiration could be anything related to my life story. I seldom write stories about others as I wouldn’t be able to write as honestly as I’d like.

    If you had the opportunity to learn anything in this world, what will it be?

    I would’ve studied psychology, especially criminal psychology. I believe everyone has a dark side – it exists even in the subconscious of people with the kindest heart. I like that it is other-worldly, mysterious, and hard to believe yet it is so real.

    On a scale of 1-10, how much of a foodie are you?

    10. As a person who cooks, I am always drawn to good food, especially yummy food made by chefs who cook with passion.

    How do you like to spend your free time?

    I love spending time with myself quite regularly. I find that it is important to be in touch with my soul. Crime/psychological thriller, mystery movie/books , coffee and matcha are my favorite me-time companions.

    What turns you off on a date?

    Lame jokes hahaha. I think humor is very important in any conversation.

    Sexy is not about revealing clothing, it’s not all about your body shape under your clothing as well. Sexiness is expressed in the way you talk, the way you perceive people, and the way you move. It is about your knowledge, your culture and your way of life.

    Hi…My name is Nekisha Cyrus, but most people know me as ‘NEICY’. I am from Trinidad and Tobago, so yes I’m definitely an island girl who loves the Caribbean and our infectious culture. I consider myself to be a creative spirit exploring life. My personal motto is ‘Live, Love, Laugh, Learn & Leap’. I am very passionate about entertainment and wear many different hats in the entertainment industry, from music, to modeling to being a media personality.

    Where did your inspiration to be a singer songwriter come from?

    Ok, so please don’t laugh…lol. But I knew I was destined to be a singer, songwriter and entertainer from the first time I saw the Spice Girls on my TV. I remember I was like around 8 years old when I saw their ‘Wannabe’ music video and something in me said, ‘Yes, that’s what I Wannabe’, LOL – Get it!

    Which is your favorite or most memorable track you have done/collaborated on so far?

    Up until 2018, my favorite track was the first ever track I recorded back in 2011. It was an upbeat Dancehall Pop fused song called ‘Do it Like Dat’ (featured on my first EP album ‘Ms. Un-Official’), it was the first time I really stepped out of my comfort zone and tried something new. That song definitely had a vibe to it. But then fast forward to 2018, when I released my single ‘Body’ and this track has become my new favorite.

    I think what I love most about it is that you can hear my growth as an artiste. From the lyrics to the flow, it’s more confident, a bit cocky…LOL. My music has matured a lot and at its own pace. And even while recording it, I was more hands on with what I wanted the finish product to sound like.

    How is a typical day like for you?

    Typical day for me starts with me on most days getting a proper nights rest (between 6-7 hours of sleep). I usually wake up around 6am. I like to meditate and get my mind right and centered to start my day. Then I go for a workout from 7am for about one to one and a half hrs, shower and have breakfast.

    Then my work day begins…I am a full time entertainment blogger for the Caribbean Region which I love because it’s based on entertainment which is my passion.

    So I spent the majority of my day writing, researching, updating blogs, etc. for my website Caribbean Entertainment Hub. Outside of that, I’m always writing new music or am at the studio working on new music. I’m also a part-time radio host at ‘We Room Radio’, so I am at the radio station on some days as well.

    Do you have any other hobbies or interests?

    Yes, can food be hobbies? LOL. But on a real note, when it comes to my hobbies or interests, I love hiking, nature and water…OMG I call it nature therapy. I’m also into personal self-development, I even started a motivational blog called ‘Neicy World’.

    I also love reading and by reading, I mean listening to audiobooks…LOL. I also love dancing. And my gym time has also become like a serious interest of mine of lately. Slowly getting addicted!

    If you could meet anyone past or present, who will it be?

    Hmmm….I will have to say Beyoncé. I really admire her work ethic and how humble she has remained throughout all of her success. Also Rihanna, because of the level of success and longevity she has attained thus far, being a Caribbean girl as well, I will definitely like to pick her brain and gain some insight into how she was able to do it.

    On a scale of 1-10, how much of a party animal are you?

    I’m like a solid 5, don’t really consider myself to be much of a party animal. I think it’s because I work so much in the entertainment industry, that in my down time, I prefer to be nowhere close to it. I rather go to the cinema or find a new food spot I haven’t tried or a fun game night with close friends, filled with a lot of shit talk and laughing.

    What is a funny or awkward attempt a guy has tried to know you?

    I had a guy donate a huge amount of school supplies to a Charity Book drive I was doing last year in an effort to impress me and ask me out on a date, which he later did. Men…SMH. I didn’t mind though. It was a lot of school supplies…LOL.

    So I’m basically a fairy and I make music. I’m from California (but I live in England). I have a pet frog and I make things levitate. 

    How will you describe your fashion style?

    My fashion style is inspired by all things magical. I want to feel like a fairy goddess walking about the world, so that’s pretty much what I go for. Flowy, pretty things that look and feel soft. I also like to draw pagan symbols on my face. It goes with every outfit. 

    What is a typical day like for you?

    A typical day for me includes getting up suuuuper early – I get up at like five every day – and then spending the day working on my various projects. I take photos, make music and manage my social media.

    Do you follow a strict beauty regime to look so beautiful?

    Nope I just aim to take my makeup off with a wipe at the end of every day, as long as I manage that, my world doesn’t fall apart. If I forget though…. oh, if I forget. It usually only happens if I’ve had too much to drink on a night out. 

    Which is the best compliment you have received?

    The best compliment I have ever received was that I shined with a light unseen before. It made me feel quite special.

    If you could travel to anywhere in the world, where will you go?

    I would go to Antartica to hear true silence.

    Do you have any favorite quotes or mottos you like to use in life?

    I don’t have any favourite quotes, but one thing I use in my life is whenever I think something is impossible, I think of the scene in A Series of Unfortunate Events where Violet Baudelaire and her siblings are abandoned in the car with the doors locked on train tracks. It seems like an impossible situation to survive, but Violet fashions a projectory device out of seat lining and cushion springs and manages to redirect the train so it misses them. If she can do that, I can probably sort anything else.

    What will you change about the world if you had a chance to?

    I would be rid of dishonesty and corruption across the globe, as it’s ruining everyone’s life whether they know it or not. If the wealthy stop taking advantage of the poor, the world might not be on fire for two seconds.

    Hi thank you so much for featuring me. Well where can I start; I was born in Zimbabwe. I’m 18 years old originally from Toronto, Canada. Right now I’m living in Calgary Canada currently starting my first year in University studying Psychology. I sing, and song write, and have been doing that since I was a youngin. I also love modeling and taking dope pictures. Being so active on my social media, I love showing confidence and self-love.

    What is your proudest achievement so far?

    Being so young, I have yet to accomplish my dreams and goals. Being so influenced by fashion, music and media, I want to one day have my own clothing line, model and promote for big brands and release at least an EP. But currently, the biggest and proudest accomplishment I’ve done so far is getting into school and getting my education.

    Which is the best compliment you have received?

    While working at Walmart, I’ve had a couple customers approach me and tell me “I’m too beautiful to work here”. Haha.

    How is a typical day like for you?

    A typical day for me will be me attending class. If I’m not in class or at work, I’m listening to beats all day and writing music. I can spend a whole day doing music and trying to make a single beat turn into a dope song! Either that or I’m planning and contacting local photographers to book photoshoots. Also throughout my day, I’m obsessed with watching Netflix. I’m actually currently binge-watching “ How I Met Your Mother”, Dynasty”, “Lee Daniels’ Star” and “Bob’s Burger”.

    Do you have any guilty indulgences for food?

    I’m the world’s pickiest eater. I tend to eat what I know and that would be anything Italian like lasagna – girl if I had a choice, I would eat lasagna for breakfast, lunch, and dinner! I’m also obsessed with Nigerian Jollof rice if it’s made right.

    Would you rather be able to control time or control objects?

    I would much rather be able to control time because my time management skills are terrible haha. I always feel like there is never enough hours in the day and I try so hard to do multiple things throughout the day and never have time to finish it. So having the power to control time would be dope.

    If you could meet anyone past or present, who will it be?

    I would love to meet Kanye West. I look up to that man so much. He isn’t just a rapper but he has multiple businesses and so many other things going on like fashion design, music producing and much more and I look up to that! He’s also just got so much confidence that I aspire to be; people call it cockiness but I f*ck with it. His level of confidence is something that I aspire to be. If I were to meet Kanye, I would want him to be my mentor. I f*ck with his vision.

    What is an ideal first date for you?

    An ideal first for me will be something fun. I like men who are creative. For a first date, I would love to do something fun where I can really capture the man’s personality, and also showcase mine. A regular dinner will be ok too but I much rather do something fun and out of the box! Let’s take a salsa dancing class! Let’s go on a picnic!

    Someone who isn’t just good looking but also smart and confident in themselves for who they are will get my attention any day!     Hi Isla Noir it is a pleasure to feature you on SimplySxy.  Please share with our readers a little about yourself and where you’re from?

    I’m originally from Melbourne, Australia, but have been fortunate to live all around the world. I currently live in Vancouver, Canada. I’m a singer/songwriter and I compose music for TV and Film. I’m also an actress and I love getting to explore new characters and worlds through my work.

    How will you describe your fashion style?

    My fashion changes a little bit from wherever I’m living. But I’d have to say its somewhere between future/rock/princess. I love keeping up with current fashion and turning it into my own, but I’m quite aware of keeping fashion sustainable and not succumbing to trends that are going to go out of fashion really quickly.

    What is your beauty regime like?

    It’s been the same things since I was 15. I cleanse with a facial soap (nothing fancy! I love the rocky mountain soap company or this really cheap Thai brand that I get my friends to send me).

    I use SK-II essence and then a day/night moisturizer. Again, nothing fancy, usually Nivea or Olay. And I ALWAYS apply sunscreen during the day.

    Do you have any hobbies?

    I love scuba diving and have recently gotten into freediving. I’ve been scuba diving for eight years and love getting to see new places and aquatic life.

    I also enjoy photography.

    What kind of music do you listen to?

    Everything! But if I had to narrow it down to the songs I have on high rotation, it’s usually Indie, European and Australian electro, German trance and British singer/songwriters.

    But seriously I listen to everything, it inspires me and keeps me updated on whats going on in the music world and brings me inspiration for writing my own music.

    If you could have a superpower, what will it be?

    It’d be really cool to be able to time travel!

    Chocolate! It’s my one weakness in life.

    What do you not get about guys?

    I don’t get how they can sleep anywhere! All of my guy friends can sleep on planes, in cars, standing up… I’m so jealous! haha.

    Hi Alyssa it is a pleasure to feature you on SimplySxy.  Please share with our readers a little about yourself and where you’re from?

    I grew up in Maine, but as soon as I got old enough, I moved to Beverly Hills to escape the cold. I now spend my time between Nashville and Los Angeles. I am a model and singer/songwriter.

    Which is your most memorable modeling experience so far?

    My favorite modeling experience was a shoot I did for SelvaRey Rum. It was shot in downtown Nashville at the Hermitage Hotel. The Hermitage has such a gorgeous bar and I really loved my wardrobe and the Vincent Peach jewelry that was featured in the shoot as well. And on top of all that, their rum is absolutely amazing … I may or may not have been buzzing on the cacao flavored one during the shoot!

    Where do you get inspiration for your music and song writing?

    Inspiration for song writing comes from everywhere!… From relationships, other songs, people you meet etc. I feel oddly inspired to write after a  workout or when I am traveling.

    How is a typical day like for you?

    Every day is different work wise. Some days I am up early preparing for a photoshoot, other days I am meeting with producers/songwriters. I am in the gym 5 days a week and try to keep up on cooking so I have healthy options throughout the week.

    Is there a superstition you believe in?

    I’m not really superstitious, but I would say that I probably put too much stock in fortune cookies.

    Do you have any hobbies?

    Working out, playing the piano, cooking, volleyball.

    If you were to describe yourself as a flavor, what will it be?

    I’m like one of those surprise flavored tootsie pops… sometimes I’m sweet, sometimes I’m sarcastic and witty, sometimes I’m cut and dry, sometimes I’m playful… you never know.

    Are there any exciting projects coming up in 2017 to look forward to?

    I am spending a lot of time in the studio now and will be releasing my first music video this year! Very excited.
