Japanese Cosplayer Kiku
Hi. Thanks for having me. I’m Kiku from Japan. I make doujinshi, do cosplay and draw. From time to time I also manage and/or promote cosplay shooting events at special idyllic locations.
How did you get started into cosplaying and how long have you been doing it?
I’ve been actively cosplaying for about 18 years. As a child I liked the female Ranma and we would sometimes roleplay. As it happened, on a fateful day, I would learn about the existence of cosplay and thought, “I wanna do that, too!”
Which cosplay character have you enjoyed cosplaying most?
If it’s OK to mention two: Tanya von Degurechaff from Youjosenki and Futatsuiwa Mamizou from Touhou Project.
What misconceptions do you hear about cosplay?
I’m not quite sure about misconceptions but as far as nasty comments go (from both people who know and who don’t know cosplay), people have called me out for not being a young girl (the “youjo” in “Youjosenki” means “young girl”) or criticized my face or simply uttered things like “gross” or “disgusting”.
Is there a city or country you’ve always like to travel to for a holiday?
I’m actually right there right now as I’m typing this (LOL): Germany.
I really don’t want to leave so please sponsor me so I can stay longer (LOL). I haven’t been to any museums yet and most of the Christmas markets were canceled before I had the chance to visit them (cry).
Would you rather be able to control fire or water?
I would say fire. It’s cool (pun not intended). Especially in RPGs: I like games where you can use elemental magic and that’s where I usually only use fire magic.
If you could time travel, what will you like to witness or experience?
I would like to travel back and meet my young self around the time, when I was receiving a fair amount of pressure and bullying from different sides, to take her out for a walk and tell her to keep calm, be more at ease and take better care of her own heart.
What is a funny or lame attempt a guy has tried to know you?
“Excuse me, I don’t have a clock or watch with me right now so could you please tell me what time it is?”
When I was still in school, a foreigner who clearly looked much older once grabbed me by my arm in a train and pulled me outside to tell me in broken Japanese: “I’m 20 and teach English in Japan. Let’s be friends!”
Thank you for taking the time to answer our questions Kiku. One question before we end, how do you define “sexy”?
I would say someone is sexy if they are good at showing and presenting their charm and attractiveness.
