Poet Vanessa Emma Gelagobian

Writing has truly always been a huge part of my life; growing up, it was very hard for me to make friends, instead everywhere I went, my notebook and pencil came too.

I grew up in a household full of love but time was always all over the place which I understood.

I always tried my best to stay thankful.

My immigrant parents were always at work to give me and my family a safe/better life without struggle while my grandmother would take care of me, who hardly spoke any English but a day didn’t pass without her telling me stories of my grandfather I never met.

My siblings are 12 years older than me, as being their baby sister, I always had to tiptoe around because certain things I wanted to express, I knew my older brothers wouldn’t understand and I couldn’t blame them. I mean, how can I? I am so thankful for my parents and everything they’ve done just to come to a country that gives them no days off!

Writing has became my backbone, something I can lean on unlike a broken back; It follows me every single place where I go and I know it would never leave me!

These hands never stop writing; It’s the only way my soul can create.

What inspired you to be a poet and are there any poets whose works inspire you?

When I was in high school, one of my teachers always told me I had a special gift! She would always see me writing in my notebook and one day, she asked me to read her my writing and I did! I was very nervous because it was my very first time reading my writing to anyone! I felt very good because I let go of a fear I had! The fear of judgement!

That same day I knew I had to share my writing to the world! As I went home and did my research for writers, that’s when I found out about poetry!!

Francis and the lights inspires me. His creativity speaks for itself.

Shakespeare’s work is the most beautiful work. I am truly so inspired.

Also,

Kanye West, his creativity is everything.

Do you have any favourite quotes or mottos you like to use?

One of my go-to quotes I wrote and love to use:

Never steel from the hand that once fed you.

Is there anything you like to learn or do but haven’t had the time for it yet

I would love to learn: New languages

and

Do: Travel the world and try every bread from each country.

What is the best compliment you have received so far?

I find it best when I compliment others for having such a beautiful soul! It truly makes me feel like I got complimented by doing that!

As were all; We should always uplift each other and never bring anyone down because we never know what someone is truly going through.

Which flavour best describes you?

Rose.

What is an ideal first date to you?

Having a picnic in nature.

Thank you for taking the time to answer our questions Vanessa. One question before we end, how do you define “sexy”?

A strong independent being with a kind soul who has pure love to the fullest with no limits.
